Four weeks after the season ended the ride the Defender women’s basketball team took Defender Nation on still seems a bit surreal.
Standing 7-6 nearly halfway through the season, the Defenders looked like anything but national champion contenders. Over the next three months the Defenders regrouped, stayed the course, and put together a run that very nearly ended in storybook fashion.
(Thursday, April 20; Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt University and the City of Sioux Center have announced Carrie Krohn will be the director of the American State Bank (ASB) Sports Complex which is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in fall 2022.
Dordt University is pleased to announce the recipients of the Lambertus Verberg Prize for Excellence in Kuyperian Scholarship, one of the largest scholarships made available to Dordt students.
Joya Schreurs, a sophomore studying theology and English, will receive a one-year $15,000 scholarship. Anna Herman, a sophomore studying accounting, is runner-up and will receive a one-year $10,000 scholarship. Eoghan Holdahl, Bri Blevins, and Kara Jasper wrote essays that received honorable mention.
Dordt is scheduled to play two doubleheaders with Concordia in GPAC baseball on Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22. The Thursday twinbill gets underway at 1:00 and the Friday contests will start at 4:00.
The Event... The Dordt men's track and field team will compete in the South Dakota Challenge, a three-day meet hosted by the University of South Dakota, this weekend. Competition begins on Thursday, April 21 at 5pm with most of the distance races. Day two's focus will mainly be field events and will commence around 2:30pm. The meet will conclude on Saturday, beginning at 10am for field events and at noon on the track.

Austin Brown, a senior digital media major from Fort Collins, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly from medical complications earlier this week.
“As a campus community, we mourn the loss of Austin, and we pray that the Holy Spirit will minister to his family and friends during these difficult times,” says President Erik Hoekstra.
Digital Media Production Instructor Mark Volkers says that Austin was always ready with a quip and an easy laugh.
“Austin was a bright presence in class,” he says. “Austin’s honesty was so refreshing.”
Nolan Karel, a senior at Grandville Calvin Christian High School (Mich.), has announced his intention to attend Dordt University and join the Defender men’s soccer program.
“We were drawn to Nolan's character and a desire to grow in his faith and search for community,” said Dordt Head Coach Ryan Gresse. “He will provide competition at the center midfield position and we are excited to have Nolan on campus in the fall.”
The Dordt University Music Department is hosting the harp recital of senior Hannah Burgsma of Londesborough, Ontario, Canada on Saturday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium.
Repertoire highlights include virtuosic renditions of Welsh and Irish traditional tunes by John Thomas and John Cheshire and classical works remastered for harp by renowned harpists such as Glinka, Grandjany, and Renie. This recital also features an original arrangement which weaves together three hymns beloved by many.
The Dordt University Music Department will present a small ensembles recital on Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. The recital will feature a saxophone ensemble, percussion ensemble, jazz combo, vocal duet, and a four-person piano piece.
The saxophone ensemble is led by Pamela De Haan, Dordt's saxophone instructor and also a voice instructor. Members include:

(Friday, April 15, 2022; Sioux Center, Iowa) Zach Espenson, a senior at Windom High School (Minnesota), has announced his intention to attend Dordt and join the Defender hockey program.
"Zach is going to be an instrumental part of the Defender Hockey program for the next four years. He has tremendous skill that will allow him to be a calming presence for us on the ice. Zach came on this campus and was drawn to the Defender Way and is eager to get to work for us. We could not be more excited for him,” said Dordt hockey coach Tyler Morgan.
Dale Zevenbergen has been named director of the K&K Dooyema Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and will assume the role in June.
Zevenbergen has worked at Dordt University for 23 years. For 9 years, he served as an adjunct instructor of business administration; for 13 years, he worked in a full-time capacity at Dordt in roles such as special gifts officer, interim executive director of enrollment, business administration instructor, and internship coordinator. He previously worked at Pella Corporation in a variety of roles and at Primerica in financial planning.
(Friday, April 15, 2022; Sioux Center, Iowa) Josiah Wittenberg has announced his intention to attend Dordt and join the Defender track and field and cross country programs. Wittenberg competes for Pella High School (Iowa).
Dordt will travel to Sioux City to play Morningside on Friday, April 15 starting at 1:00 and will host Jamestown on Saturday, April 16 also starting at 1:00.
The Dordt University Choral Department will present the High School Choral Festival concert on Friday, April 22 at 7 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium and De Witt Gymnasium. This concert will feature a mass festival choir including singers from 16 Christian high schools representing 12 different states. They will be joined by all of the Dordt choirs: Bella Voce women’s chorus, Canons of Dordt men’s chorus, 4th Avenue Singers, Chorale, and Concert Choir.
(Thursday, April 14; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Brian Eekhoff Golf Facility will be dedicated on Friday, April 22, as Dordt University recognizes the contributions of many to make the specialized facility a reality. The day will include an open house, comments from Dordt University administration and the Eekhoff family. The open house will begin at 3:00 with the dedication program starting at 4:00.
(Thursday, April 14; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt football program has announced its most recent additions to the recruit class of incoming freshmen and brings the number of commits to recruiting class and 42 individuals make up that list.
