(Friday, May 13; Sioux Center, Iowa) With the completion of the 2021-22 baseball and softball seasons we can put a couple historic pitching performances in historic perspective.
Gyeongju Kim (Junior; Seoul, South Korea) and Abby Kraemer (Junior, Alta, Iowa) put together record setting seasons that culminated with each being named first team all-conference in voting done by the league coaches.
Kim was 5-5 this season with a single season record of 109 after fanning 99 last season. Kim’s 5.45 walks to strikeout ratio is 5.45 and ranks fourth all-time and is the best since 1970 and betters his 4.55 posted in 2021. This is the second year in a row Kim pitched between 68 and 69 innings and he has two of the top four innings pitched in a season totals on record in the program.
“Not much changed for Kim in terms of his stuff this year. Talking with him, the big difference was his ability to prepare all fall so he was physically ready to go when the spring got here,” said Dordt baseball coach Nathan Bacon.
Kim’s 208 strikeouts established a new career mark, bettering Connor Hopkins’s 181 total from 2014-17 and his strikeout to walk ratio is 5.2 which is also tops with Case De Haan’s 3.68 from 1967-70 leading the list. Kim’s 10 wins rank him ninth at Dordt with Troy Vander Molen’s 18 leading the list. Kim also set a single game record for strikeouts in a complete game, 11-inning win over Hastings when he fanned 21.
“I can’t say enough about the young man his and the way he relentlessly pursues his goals and his desire to push Defender baseball forward,” said Bacon. “This year he had some incredible individual performance that played a big role in us having a chance to make the GPAC tournament entering our final weekend of regular season play.”
Kraemer posted a 16-10 record with a 1.24 earned run average and struck out 204 batters in 169 innings pitched. Her 204 strikeouts are the most on record at Dordt, bettering her 2021 total of 154. Her strikeout to walks ratio was 5.4 and ranks 5th all-time at Dordt and her 16 wins ranks 3rd behind Dawn Van Kley’s 18 and 19 wins in 2002 and 2001.
“Abby had an outstanding year in the circle. For her to accumulate over 200 strikeouts on the season is truly remarkable and she was a large part of our success as a team this season. Abby worked really hard during the summer and off season on her changeup and increasing her velocity,” said Dordt softball coach Jeff Zomer. "Abby and her catcher Karli Olsen have unbelievable chemistry as a pitcher/catcher duo."
Kraemer has won 33 games during her career which included a shortened 2020 season that ended due to COVID. The win total is sixth all-time. She has struck out 395 batters in her career and trails only Dawn Van Kley’s 499 and her strikeout to walk ratio is 3.9 which ranks second behind Tianna Soodsma’s 6.12
“As Abby continues to develop and grow as a pitcher, she will continue to refine her drop ball as a pitch in her arsenal and will work again this coming off season on increasing her pitch velocity. Abby is a fierce competitor, and we look very much forward to watching her compete for her team again next season!” said Zomer.
