(Friday, July 16; Sioux Center, Iowa) The 2020-21 Academic All-American Football Team, selected by CoSIDA, has been announced and two Dordt Defenders have been named to the team. The honor recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. David Kacmarynski (Senior; Pella, Iowa) and Alex Huisman (Junior; Pella, Iowa) were named to the team.
“This is such a prestigious award. For David, this is back-to-back years he’s received it. Both of these guys are difference makers on the field and tremendous leaders in our locker room. They were both captains and really exemplify what the Defender Way is all about,” said Dordt football coach Joel Penner.
Kacmarynski is a repeat honoree after claiming CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in 2019 as well. He’s a two-time first-team selection in all-GPAC voting and earned second-team honors once. He graduated in May with degrees in history and political science and plans to attend law school after maintaining a 3.8 cumulative grade point average at Dordt. Kacmarynski was one of four athletes to claim the honor for a second time.
Huisman is a first-time honoree and also earned second-team NAIA All-American honors this season after helping the Defenders to 320 rushing yards per game (2nd in the NAIA) and 43.7 points per game (6th in the NAIA). He’s studying biology at Dordt and has a 3.83 grade point average through three years. Huisman was a GPAC honorable mention selection in 2019.
The Defender football program completed an 8-3 2020 campaign and qualified for the NAIA National Championship series for the first time in program history.
