The Dordt Defender volleyball team will play in the semifinal round of the NAIA National Championship on Friday, April 30 in Sioux City, Iowa. Dordt draws Missouri Baptist as their opponent at 7:30 pm.
Missouri Baptist is 26-2 this season and finished the American Midwest Conference with a 9-0 record. Missouri Baptist lost to Midland 3-2 on September 5 and then banged out 14 wins in a row before Ottawa swept the Spartans. The St. Louis, Missouri based school is on a current 12 match winning streak dating back to March 23.
Chris Nichols’ team is averaging 13.51 kills per set with a .310 kill efficiency and limit opponents to 9.05 kills per outing with a .106 kill efficiency. The Spartans have a 213-70 kills advantage this season and have outscored teams 2.1-1.2 on blocks per set this season.
Isidora Stojovic averages 3.33 kills per outing with a .304 kill efficiency and Giovanna Tapigliani is at 3.23 kills per set with a .330 efficiency. Emma Lattimore accounts for 2.56 kills and Sara Klunder is at 2.49 with a .381 efficiency. Manuela Vargas averages 10.76 assists and Shannon McClain has averaged 10.49 assists as the tea players have split the setting duties almost 50-50. Ariana Macies tops the team in digs with a 4.2 average and 45 service aces.
The Defenders are 18-6 overall and 11-5 in the league and have gone 12-1 since a loss to Midland on October 10.
Dordt is averaging 13.11 kills per set with a .238 kill efficiency and has a 96-80 ace serves edge. The Defenders also record 2.78 points per set on blocks while allowing 12.15 kills per set with 1.44 blocks against per outing.
Alli Timmermans has a 2.65 kills per set average with a .355 kill efficiency. Jessi De Jager adds 2.60 kills per outing with a .285 kill efficiency and Brenna Krommendyk is good for 2.47 kills with a .389 efficiency and 1.37 blocks per set. Corrina Timmermans has a 2.44 kills per set average and 2.2 digs. Jori Bronner accounts for 1.15 blocks per set and 1.33 kills
Hannah Connelly tops the Defenders with a 5.04 digs per set average and Corrina Timmermans is at 2.24 digs. Megan Raszler puts up 6.89 assists per set and Corina Beimers is averaging 4.67. Corrina Timmermans has 31 of Dordt’s 91 ace serves this season. Corrina Timmermans, Megan Raszler and Emma Bousema all have double digits in service aces. Hannah Connelly’s digs per set average is up to 5.03 and Erica Bousema’s is 2.37.
Dordt got to this point with a 3-0 win over Concordia on Thursday night by set scores of 25-23, 25-18, 25-21 with Alli Timmermans putting down 11 kills and Corrina Timmermans was at 10 with Raszler putting up 24 assists and Hannah Connelly accounted for 18 digs. Dordt got out of pool play with a 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 25-14, 15-11 win over Bellevue and a 24-26, 13-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-12 win over Park.
Missouri Baptist upended Grand View 13-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12 in the quarterfinal round behind 16 kills by Emma Lattimore and 11 from Isidora Stojovic with 11. Manuela Vargas put up 34 assists and had 18 digs. Missouri Baptist had nine service aces in the match. Missouri Baptist beat IU Kokomo in pool play 25-18, 25-23, 25-20 and Keiser 25-20, 25-17. 23-25, 25-21.
The teams have played four times and have split the competitions played in 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2017. The 2017 match was in the pool play portion of the National Championship and Missouri Baptist won 19-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-18, 16-14. Ema Altena had 19 kills and Leah Kamp 13 in the loss and Jamie Gesink put up 49 assists. The Spartans got 24 kills from Marion Couraud and Caterina Cigarini put down 14. Rachel Pool put up 53 assists in the contest.

The winner will face the winner of Jamestown and Midland on Saturday at 7:00 pm in the NAIA Championship.
