Dordt will host Dakota Wesleyan on Thursday, December 31 at 3:00 pm in GPAC women’s basketball.
Dakota Wesleyan is 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the GPAC after a December 22 win over Hastings. The Tigers have secured back to back wins in GPAC play after losing three in a row from December 9-16 to Northwestern, Jamestown and Morningside.
Haidyn Pitsch leads the team with a 14.2 points per game average and she averages 4.1 rebounds per game. Matti Reiner puts in 11.9 points per game with 6.7 rebounds and Jada Campbell’s average is 10.0 points per game with 7.7 rebounds. Campbell is converting 46.7 percent of her field goal attempts. Korynn Clason adds 6.4 points per game and she has played in seven games while Haylee Mork has a 5.7 points per game average.
Wesleyan is scoring 68.7 points per game and allow 62 and the Tigers are outrebounding teams 40.3-33.1. Jason Christensen’s team is converting 39.8 percent of its field goal attempts and 33.5 percent of its three-point attempts while allowing opponents to make 37 percent of their field goal tries and 29.4 percent of the three-point shots attempted.
Dordt is 6-6 this season and 5-4 in the GPAC and won four out of five games going into the Christmas break.
Dordt is outscoring teams 71.3-69.6 and outrebound teams 45.0-34.6. Dordt converts 39.6 percent of its field goals while allowing teams to make 39.2 percent. Dordt also has made 31.8 percent of its three-point shots while opponents have made 34.8 percent.
Ashtyn Veerbeek is scoring 14.2 points per game while grabbing 9.5 rebounds per contest and she is making 47 percent of her field goal attempts and she is averaging just over two assists per game. Bailey Beckman scores 13.7 points per game with just under three assists per game and she leads the team with 17 steals. Erika Feenstra’s scoring average is 12.8 points per game and her rebounding average is 5.5 and Karley Gustafson adds 10.1 points per game and she makes 56 percent of her field goals and she takes in 6.9 rebounds. Mya Chmielewski and Bailey Tetzlaff add 6.8 and 5.3 points per game.
Dordt had to battle through a sluggish performance on Saturday, December 19 before prevailing 62-56 over Mount Marty in Yankton. The Defenders converted 12-28 three-point shots on the way to the win and had a 40-26 rebounding advantage. Beckman led the Defenders with 14 points and six rebounds while Jordyn Winterfeld and Gustafson each ahd 10 points with Gustafson taking in six rebounds. Veerbeek and Feenstra each ahd eight and Siennah Stamness came off the bench to score nine.
Wesleyan turned away Hastings 68-60 on December 22 with Matti Reiner scoring 20 on 8-15 shooting and Haidyn Pitsch added 14 while Campbell was good for 10. Dakota Wesleyan led at every quarter break and put the game out of reach with a 22-11 run in the third quarter.
Dordt swept the three games last season with 88-86 and 74-70 wins in the regular season and a 75-55 win in the GPAC postseason. Beckman and Gustafson led Dordt with 21 and 20 respectively in the 88-86 win in Sioux Center while Kynedi Cheeseman had a game high 26 points with 12 assists in the loss.
The Defenders outscored the Tigers in the fourth quarter of their game in Corn Palace in mid-January 28-24 to secure the four point win. Mya Chmielewski had 17 and Feenstra 16 to pace Dordt while Sarah Carr had 24 points and seven rebounds.
Dordt ran away from Wesleyan in the third game of the year as the Defenders outscored the visitors 42-17 in the second half to turn a 38-33 deficit into a 20-point win. Van Maanen had 17 points and Feenstra 16 for Dordt while Cheeseman led the Tigers with 15.
Dordt will host Midland on Saturday at 2:00 before traveling to Omaha, Nebraska on Wednesday, January 6.
