Men's Basketball Hosts Briar Cliff Tuesday

THE FOE…

Briar Cliff is 3-3 this season and 1-1 in GPAC play.  The Chargers have a conference win over Mount Marty and a league loss to Dakota Wesleyan.  The other two wins are over Dickinson State and Bellevue.

Briar Cliff is outscoring teams 71.7-70.3 and are getting outrebounded 38.3-31.2.  The Chargers rely heavily on the three-point shot with over half of their field goal attempts coming from behind the three-point line. The Chargers make 43 percent of their field goal tries and 35 percent of their long shots.

Jaden Kleinhesselink is scoring 15 points per game and gets 6.5 rebounds per contest and is handing out two assists per contest. Ethan Freidel adds 13.8 points per game with 3.2 rebounds and Nick Hoyt and Quinten Vasa are scoring 12.8 and 10.5 points per game respectively.  Conner Groves and Quinn Vesey are at 8.2 and 7.8 points per game respectively and Vasa and Vesey are averaging 6.3 and 6.2 rebounds per game respectively.

DEFENDER NOTES…

The Defender men are 5-2 after beating Kansas Wesleyan (83-80), Bellevue (87-76), Viterbo (77-67), Presentation (98-59) and Midland (83-72).  The Defenders suffered their first loss of the season on November 18 by an 80-78 score to Dakota Wesleyan and also lost to Concordia 82-59 on Saturday, November 21 in Seward. 

Dordt converts 48.6 percent of its field goals while outscoring teams 80.7-73.7 and the Defenders try nearly 10 more free throws per game than opponents.  Dordt has outrebounded teams 38.6-35.9 and limit opponents to 43.2 percent field goal shooting and 32.3 percent three-point shooting. 

Jacob Vis scores 15.0 points per game while getting 7.6 rebounds per game.  He is converting 66 percent of his field goals and has 11 blocked shots. Garrett Franken is at 14.7 points per game with 7.3 rebounds and Jesse Jansma’s average per game is 13.9 and he has a team high 4.0 assists per game. Jansma leads the team with 12 made three-point baskets and Cade Bleeker has 11 made three-point buckets and a 10.3 points per game average with 3.7 rebounds. Bryce Coppock is averaging 7.4 points per game and Camden Bialas and Ben Gesink each have 5.7 and 5.4 points per game averages.

LAST TIME…

Briar Cliff was last in action on November 14 and beat Mount Marty on the road by an 88-79 margin. The Chargers got out to a 46-33 halftime lead and converted 52 percent of their field goals and 43 percent of their three-point shots. Freidel scored 20 and Groves came off the bench to score 17 with 5-7 three-point shooting. Hoyt added 15 and Kleinhesselink knocked down 11.

Dordt was tied 13-13 with Concordia midway through the first half on Saturday but fell behind 35-19 at halftime and never made a serious run at the Bulldogs before losing 82-59. Franken had 17  points and four rebounds and three other players score seven.   Dordt was held to 36 percent field goal shooting.

HISTORY…

Dordt swept the games with Briar Cliff last season winning 82-63 on November 23 and taking a 92-86 win on February 12. The Defenders were led in the November win by Chad Barkema’s 19 and Franken had 18.  Jackson Lamb scored 25 in the loss for Briar Cliff and Freidel had 17 before leaving the game with injury.

In the February meeting Dordt was up 45-31 and then had to hold on as Briar Cliff came back and took the lead in the second half behind Lamb’s 33 point outburst. Franken had 30 and Marcus Winterfeld 16 in the win and Dordt had a 41-38 rebounding advantage.

Briar Cliff leads the long running series 67-39.

Dordt travels to Morningside on Wednesday, December 2 and will host Doane on Saturday, December 5.
