Men's Basketball Goes To Concordia Saturday

The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team will travel to face Concordia on Saturday, November 21 at 4:00 pm in Seward, Nebraska.

Concordia is 5-1 this season and 2-0 in league play with GPAC wins over Midland (82-55) and Northwestern (77-74).  The Bulldogs started the season with a 72-69 loss to Tabor and have since strung together five wins in a row.

The Bulldogs average 87.8 points per game and allow 66 points per game with a 42.3-35.3 rebounds per game average. Concordia is converting 47 percent of its field goals and 35 percent of its three-point shots. Teams are making 40 percent of their field goal tries and 33 percent of its three-point shots.

Justin Wiersema scores 16.3 points per game with 4.2 rebounds and Carter Kent is scoring 13.5 points per game while Sam Scarpelli and Gage Smith score 10.7 and 10.0 points per game. Klay Uher is adding 8.2 points per game while Smith is averaging a double-double with 12.3 rebounds per game.


The Defender men are 5-1 after beating Kansas Wesleyan (83-80), Bellevue (87-76), Viterbo (77-67), Presentation (98-59) and Midland (83-72).  The Defenders suffered their first loss of the season on November 18 by an 80-78 score. 

Dordt converts 50.7 percent of its field goals while outscoring teams 84.3-72.3 and the Defenders try 10 more free throws per game than opponents.  Dordt has outrebounded teams 39.0-34.7 and limit opponents to 43.3 percent field goal shooting and 32.4 percent three-point shooting.  Dordt is making 50.7 percent of its shots and 33.8 from long range.   

Jacob Vis scores 16.3 points per game while getting 8.3 rebounds per game.  He is converting 67 percent of his field goals and has eight blocked shots. Jesse Jansma scores 15.2 points per game and has 12 three-point baskets so far this season and Garrett Franken has a 14.3 points per game average with a team high 7.8 rebounds per contest. Franken and Jansma are both averaging over three assists per game. Cade Bleeker and Bryce Coppock score 11.2 and 7.5 points per game and Camden Bialas is at 6.0 points per game. Dejay Fykstra has lifted his scoring average to 5.0 and Ben Gesink scores 5.3 points per game with 2.8 assists per outing.


Dakota Wesleyan was in front of Briar Cliff 27-18 at halftime last Wednesday and held on to win 65-53. Wesleyan had a 36-30 rebounding advantage and converted 28-65 field goals and 9-30 three-point shots. Briar Cliff was limited to 3-25 from the arc and 17-49 overall.  Dakota Wesleyan only attempted two free throws while Briar Cliff got to the free throw line 20 times. Larson led the Tigers with 15 points and Schultz had 14. Schuch and Oppold each had 10 points and Schuch and Bradley Dean each had eight rebounds.

Dordt battled past a resilient Midland team 83-72 on Saturday and was led by Jacob Vis’s 17 points and seven rebounds.  Balance was again the rule for Dordt with Franken adding 15 while Bleeker and Jansma each had 13 and 12 and Gesink scored 11 while Bryce Coppock came off the bench to score nine


Dordt and Concordia split their meetings last season.  Concordia won in Seward, Nebraska by a 91-79 margin behind 25 points from Kent and 17 by Tanner Schuck.  Garrett Franken scored 20 with 11 rebounds and Zach Bussard came off the bench to score 14.   

In the return trip to Sioux Center Dordt outscored the Bulldogs 48-37 in the second half for an 86-76 win. Marcus Winterfeld came off the bench to score 21 and had seven rebounds while Josh Van Lingen and Franken each had 13. Schuck, Brevin Sloup and Smith all had 15 points for the Bulldogs in the February 8 meeting. Dordt leads the series 24-14.


Dordt will host Briar Cliff on Tuesday night, November 24 before traveling to Morningside on Wednesday, December 2.
