The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team will play a game in Seward, Nebraska to open the GPAC season. The contest starts at 2:00 against Concordia.
Concordia is 3-3 this season and 2-1 in GPAC play with conference wins over Northwestern (83-72) and Doane (111-52). The Bulldogs’ loss in league play s to Midland (91-79). Concordia has won three games in a row since starting the year with a three-game losing skid.
Concordia is outscoring teams 83.5-73.3 and have converted 39.1 percent of its field goals while allowing 39.7 percent success. The Bulldogs have taken over 35 three-point shots per game and are making 28.4 percent of those shots. Teams have converted 38.6 percent of their three-point shots against Concordia. Concordia has a slight 43.3-43.2 rebounding edge and have forced 24 turnovers per game while giving up 16 possessions per game.
Taylor Cockerill is good for 19.0 points per game and 8.2 rebounds and Taysha Rushton adds 13.0 points per game while Taylor Farrell is at 10.8 points per game off of the bench. Rylee Pauli and Mackenzie Koepke add 8.8 and 7.0 points per game. Rushton leads the team with four assists per game.
Dordt is 2-2 this season with wins over Grand View (75-64) and Midland (70-58) and losses to Dakota State (79-60) and Sterling (80-71).
Dordt is getting outscored 70.3-69.0 through four games. Dordt has outrebounded teams 47.5-38.5 but have converted 36.5 percent of its field goals and 28.0 percent of its three-point shots. Teams are making 40.8 percent of its field goals and 28.9 percent of its three-point shots against the Defenders.
Bailey Beckman leads the team with 12.0 points per game average while Karly Gustafson is averaging 11.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest while converting 55.2 percent of her field goals. Erika Feenstra adds 10.3 points per game with 5.0 rebounds and Ashtyn Veerbeek is good for 9.5 points per game with a team high 9.0 rebounds per game. Mya Chmielewski adds 7.8 points per game in a reserve role and Baylee Tetzlaff is good for 5.3 points per game.
Concordia blitzed Doane on Wednesday night 111-52 and led 44-24 at halftime. Concordia then put up 67 points in the second half of the game. Rylee Pauli had 20 points with seven rebounds and Taylor Farrell added 17. Concordia took 91 shots in the win and converted 50 percent of the field goal attempts. Concordia had a 51-38 rebounding edge and forced 31 turnovers.
Dordt beat Midland on Saturday, November 14, 70-58. Dordt was up 35-28 at halftime and limited Midland to 10 points in the third quarter. Karly Gustafson scored 18 points and snagged 12 rebounds while Bailey Beckman had 16 points and five rebounds. Ashtyn Veerbeek scored nine points and had 15 rebounds with three assists.
Concordia won the three meetings last season with a 69-55 win on January 4; 74-56 on February 8 and 94-79 in Seward in the GPAC semifinals. In the semifinal contest Dordt got behind 54-36 at halftime and battled back to within nine in fourth quarter before losing by 15. Grace Barry and Philly Lammers had 17 points each while Dordt was paced by Feenstra with 16 and Gustafson added 12. Concordia leads the series 31-9.
Dordt is scheduled to host Briar Cliff on Tuesday, November 24 and will travel to face Morningside on Wednesday, December 2.
