Football Concludes Season At Briar Cliff Saturday

Dordt will travel to Briar Cliff in GPAC football this Saturday afternoon, November 21 with kickoff at 1:00.  








Briar Cliff is 1-7 this season and is playing in its season finale. The Chargers started the season with four losses to Doane, Concordia, Midland and Morningside.  The Chargers earned their lone win of the season with a 27-18 win over Hastings on October 24.   Since then the Chargers have lost to Dakota Wesleyan, Jamestown and Northwestern.

The Chargers are averaging 10.5 points per game and allow 33 points per game.  Teams are gaining 370 yards of offense (169 on the ground and 201 in the air) against Briar Cliff and the Charger offense accounts for 209 yards per game (85 on the ground and 123 in the air).

Cayden Mitchell is 45-113 passing for 536 yards with three touchdowns and seven interceptions. John Bell has played four games at quarterback and is 11-42 passing for 455 yards with a touchdown and 11 interceptions. King Waller has 68 carries for 259 yards and 3.8 yards per carry. Mar’Kaybion Wallace has 62 rushes for 208 yards and a 3.4 average. Kobe Johnson has 17 receptions for 12.9 yards per catch and Ryan Kotey has 14 catches for 8.6 yards per catch.  Kreggor Clark has two touchdown catches and has a 10.6 yards per catch average.

MJ Montgomery and Robert Robinson have 27 and 29 solo tackles respectively with six and 8.5 sacks respectively. Donald Garland and Mike Green each have two interceptions.


The Defenders are 6-2 this season and in the GPAC with wins over Midland (22-14), Dakota Wesleyan (47-10), Jamestown (66-13), Doane (44-19),  Concordia (41-14) and Hastings (65-0).  The losses for Dordt came on October 3 against Northwestern (48-40) and October 31 against Morningside (35-30).

The Defenders run for 298 yards per game on average and pass for 230.  Dordt’s defense allows 130 yards per game on the ground and 173 in the air. Dordt is outscoring teams on average 44-19.

Noah Clayberg has completed 126-191 passes for 1547 yards and 13 touchdowns with five  interceptions.  He has also run 132 times for 947 yards—a 7.2 yards per carry average and has 15 rushing touchdowns. Carter Schiebout has 569 yards rushing on 106 attempts with a 5.4 yards per carry average with five touchdowns. Michael Sondermann has run 74 times for 240 yards and a 3.2 yards per carry average.  

Levi Jungling has caught 55 passes for a 14.8 yards per catch average and has six touchdown catches. Ben Heuvelhorst has a 9.5 yards per catch average with two touchdowns and 28 snags.  Jayden Huisman has 20 catches for 12.5 yards per catch and Raphael Carr has an 12.8 yards per catch average on 10 catches. Hayden Large has become more of a threat as the season has progressed and has 14 catches for 9.4 yards per catch and four touchdowns.   

Brett Zachman has converted 35-40 point after tries and is 9-9 on field goal attempts with a long of 43. Clayberg has punted 20 times for a 37.0 yards per punt average.

Josh Mrazek has 54 tackles and Brayton Van Kekerix has 41. Nathan Kabongo has 37 tackles with two interceptions and Jalen Placide has two interceptions.  Colyn Oostenink has six quarterback sacks and David Kacmarynski and Thomas Macomber all have four sacks. Dordt has 27 total sacks this season.


The NAIA will not have any national rankings until spring 2020.


Dordt was up 42-0 at halftime and rolled to a 65-0 win over Hastings on Saturday. Dordt limited Hastings to 190 total yards with 26 passing yards given up while piling up 420 yards on the ground and 163 passing. Clayberg ran for 138 and Ethan Thomas 120. Charley Young came off the bench to run for 98 yards and Levi Jungling caught seven passes for 93 yards and two scores.

Briar Cliff scored on a turnover against Northwestern on Saturday but then allowed 38 unanswered points before scoring on a fumble recovery and a five play, 49 yard drive to finish the game 38-21. The Chargers had 176 yards of offense while allowing 422. Waller had 22 rushes for 77 yards and Mitchell was 9-29 passing for 92 yards with three interceptions.


Dordt was a 43-7 winner over Briar Cliff last season with Brett Zachman converting on four field goals in the first half to help the Defenders to a 19-7 halftime lead.  Levi Schoonhoven and Clayberg ran for 80 and 70 yards respectively and Clayberg was 13-22 passing for 208 yards with nine completions to Jungling for 147 yards. Briar Cliff’s Rashad Brown ran for 39 yards on three carries and he caught six passes for 86 yards.

Dordt trails the series 8-4 and has won the last four games in the series.
