Men's Basketball Hosts Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday

The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:00 pm.

Dakota Wesleyan enters play with a 2-1 record and are 1-0 in GPAC play.  The Tigers started the season with a 66-63 loss to Valley City State and bounced back with a 71-48 win over Presentation.  Wesleyan opened GPAC play last weekend at home against Briar Cliff and won a low scoring contest 65-53.

The Tigers are outscoring teams 66.3-55.7 and convert 44 percent of their field goals while limiting opponents to 36.3 percent field goal shooting.  The Tigers are getting outrebounded by a slight 34.3-34.0 margin.

Koln Oppold leads the team with a 13.7 points per game average and he gets 6.3 rebounds per game. Bradley Dean and Sawyer Schulz are scoring 12.7 and 12.0 points per game and Dean is averaging seven rebounds per game. Mason Larson and Jeffrey Schuch are at 11.0 and 9.3 points per game and get 5.7 and 5.3 rebounds each. Oppold is handing out four assists per game for a team that is making 28.9 percent of its three-point shots while holding opponents to 18.9 percent three-point shooting.           


The Defender men are 5-0 after beating Kansas Wesleyan (83-80), Bellevue (87-76), Viterbo (77-67), Presentation (98-59) and Midland (83-72). 

Dordt converts 52.0 percent of its field goals while outscoring teams 85.6-70.8 and the Defenders try 10 more free throws per game than opponents.  Dordt has outrebounded teams 37.6-34.8 and limit opponents to 42.4 percent field goal shooting and 32.2 percent three-point shooting. 

Jacob Vis scores 16.2 points per game while getting 6.8 rebounds per game.  He is converting 66 percent of his field goals and has six blocked shots. Jesse Jansma scores 14.2 points per game and has 10 three-point baskets so far this season and Garrett Franken has a 14.0 points per game average with a team high 7.6 rebounds per contest. Franken and Jansma are both averaging over three assists per game. Cade Bleeker and Bryce Coppock score 10.6 and 8.6 points per game and Camden Bialas is at 6.2 points per game. Dejay Fykstra has lifted his scoring average to 6.0 and Ben Gesink scores 5.6 points per game with 2.4 assists per outing.


Dakota Wesleyan was in front of Briar Cliff 27-18 at halftime last Wednesday and held on to win 65-53. Wesleyan had a 36-30 rebounding advantage and converted 28-65 field goals and 9-30 three-point shots. Briar Cliff was limited to 3-25 from the arc and 17-49 overall.  Dakota Wesleyan only attempted two free throws while Briar Cliff got to the free throw line 20 times. Larson led the Tigers with 15 points and Schultz had 14. Schuch and Oppold each had 10 points and Schuch and Bradley Dean each had eight rebounds.

Dordt battled past a resilient Midland team 83-72 on Saturday and was led by Jacob Vis’s 17 points and seven rebounds.  Balance was again the rule for Dordt with Franken adding 15 while Bleeker and Jansma each had 13 and 12 and Gesink scored 11 while Bryce Coppock came off the bench to score nine


Dakota Wesleyan won both games last season by one point.  The November 13 game featured a last second shot by Ty Hoglund to win it 79-78.  Dordt was paced by Jesse Jansma with 17 and Franken had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Hoglund and Tyson Smiley had 22 and 21 respectively.

On January 15 the Tigers won a slowed-paced 71-70 decision.  This time it was Sam McCloud leading them with 25. Dordt was paced by Franken and Chandler Brunsting with 13 each.


Dordt will travel to Concordia on Saturday, November 21 and will host Briar Cliff on Tuesday, November 24.
