(Wednesday, May 21; Sioux Center, Iowa) Gabriel Garcia, a student at the International School of Tegucigalpa (Honduras), has announced his intention to attend Dordt and join the Defender volleyball program.

"Gabriel is an accomplished athlete with still many years of high level volleyball ahead of him.  He has competed internationally and won at the highest levels.  We are really excited about his future in our program as he will bring instant depth to our middle and right side positions.  Thanks to his coaches Luis Membreno and Luis Salgado for developing his talents.  Gabriel is a wonderful fit for our campus and Christ-centered community as he seeks to grow in all areas of The Defender Way.”

Garcia is a 6-3 opposite hitter and middle blocker. He was selected to represent the Honduras National Team three times; played in the U-19 Central American Tournament in Panama; the  U-19 NORCEA Continental Championship in Costa Rica and the U-21 Central American Tournament in El Salvador. Garcia was named MVP of his high school team during his senior season.

"I chose Dordt because it is a Christ-centered university--God is the most important aspect in my life. Second, the coaches and counselors were very kind since the first time we were in communication. Last, I found in Dordt an excellent program for my desired major and an outstanding volleyball program to develop my skills," said Garcia.

Gabriel is the son of Jaime Garcia and Astrid Cardona. He plans to study Actuarial Science at Dordt.

Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa, is a comprehensive Christian university rooted in the Reformed tradition. The Defender athletic program is a part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).
