Softball Opens Season In Aberdeen

Dordt will travel to Aberdeen, South Dakota to play in a doubleheader with the Saints on Thursday, February 13. The games are scheduled to start at 5:00 and will be played in the dome at Presentation College.


Presentation is playing in its season opener and posted a 4-42 record last season.

Cortni Mendoza batted .289 with 41 hits and had nine doubles with 22 stolen bases.  Celia Cerzo batted .279 for a team that batted .230 over the course of the season. Sierra Kilmer and Maranda McLaren each had two homeruns and Sierra Kilmer clubbed a team high 11 doubles.

Bibiana Villeda recorded all four wins on the mound for the Saints and had a 6.23 earned run average in 145 innings pitched.


This will be the season opener for Dordt after a 19-23 mark last year.

The Defenders batted .232 last season and relied heavily on Tianna Soodsma and Rachel Evavold’s pitching to post a 10-12 mark.  Evavold will not be available until the conclusion of the 2020 basketball season.

Natalie Fopma returns after missing 25 games with injury last year. Fopma batted .333 last year with 11 hits before a wrist fracture ended her season. She was 3-3 on the mound with a 2.82 earned run average. Marissa VandenBerg batted .279 and was the starting shortstop for the Defender with 39 hits and four homeruns. Hailey Heeringa is back after batting .262 with ten doubles last season and she has 115 career hits with 27 career doubles.  


Marissa VandenBerg has 142 career hits and ranks 10th all-time while Rachel Evavold’s total is 131 and she ranks 17th.  Evavold and Vanden Berg rank 5th and 6th in career doubles with 34 and 33 respectively while Hailey Heeringa is 12th with 27.  Heeringa and Evavold each have 10 homeruns and ranks 8th all-time.


Presentation and Dordt played on February 14 last season with The two teams splitting their play. Dordt won the opener with a 7-6 decision. Presentation outhit Dordt 14-7 with Dordt getting seven hits from seven different players. Carley De Roin had a homerun and Brooklyn Van Noort had three stolen bases. Tianna Soodsma scattered the 14 hits with three strikeouts and three walks to hang on to the win.

The Saints won a 3-2 decision in the doubleheader despite Dordt outhitting the Saints 7-6  in that game. Heeringa had two hits and Macy Jacobsma also had two singles. Natalie Fopma pitched five innings and struck out six with three walks and five hits allowed.


Dordt will face Valley City State, Dakota State, Presentation and Dickinson State on February 14 and 15 in Aberdeen.
