Basketball Travels To Briar Cliff Tonight

The Dordt Defender basketball teams will be on the road against Briar Cliff on Wednesday, February 12. The women’s game will start at 6:00 and the men will get underway at about 8:00.  The games will be available on KDCR 88.5 FM.


The Briar Cliff Chargers are 7-19 in women’s play and 4-14 in the league with conference wins over Mount Marty (twice), Northwestern and Doane.

The Chargers are getting outscored 78.2-67.7 and outrebounded 38.3-32.1 and are converting 42.2 percent of their field goals and allow 42.2 percent success.  Mike Powers’ team is converting 31.2 percent of its three-point shots and have committed 23 turnovers per game and have forced 21.

Konnor Sudmann is scoring 16.8 points per game to lead the Chargers and has gotten to the free throw line 146 times this season and converts 84 percent of those free throw attempts. Sudmann also has a 4.4 rebounds per game average and hands out over two assists per game, gets one block per game and two steals. Madelyn Deitchler adds 13.2 points per game and Alyssa Carley has an 11.6 average.  Deitchler is the leading rebounder with a 6.3 average and Payton Slaughter scores 8.1 points per game. Sudmann, Carley, Deitchler and Slaughter all convert 46.8 percent of their field goals or better.

The Briar Cliff men are 14-13 this season and 5-12 in the GPAC. The Chargers lost six games in a row from January 4-25 and then beat three rated teams in a row by beating Mount Marty, Morningside and Dakota Wesleyan.  Saturday the Chargers lost to Midland 96-89 to see that streak come to an end.

The Chargers are led by one of the top players in the conference in Jackson Lamb who averages 23.4 points per game with seven rebounds and he is making 47 percent of his field goals and 39 percent of his three-point shots. Ethan Freidel, who missed nine games with an injury suffered in the first meeting between Dordt and Briar Cliff, is back and averages 16.4 points per game and has made 40 percent of his three-point shots. Jaden Kleinhesselink scores 12.1 points per game with six rebounds and Austin Roetman is good for 9.7 points per outing. Nick Hoyt and Conner Groves average 8.5 and 8.3 respectively.

Briar Cliff is outscoring teams 87.6-83.7 and are getting outrebounded 36.8-34.   The Chargers are efficient on offense with a 48.8 shooting percentage and they allow 47.2 percent for opponents. The Chargers rely heavily on the three-point shot by making 40.1 percent and 50 percent of the shots the Chargers take are from the arc.


The Defenders are 20-6 this season and 12-6 in the GPAC.

Erika Feenstra is averaging a team high 17.8 points per game with 6.0 rebounds and she is making 60.5 percent of her field goals and is 112-140 from the free throw line through 26 games played. Rachel Evavold and Karly Gustafson are both averaging 10.1 points per game and have converted 56.7 and 61.3 percent of their field goal attempts. Bailey Beckman’s average is 7.7 points per game and Gabby Kreykes is at 6.6. Payton Harmsen leads the team with 38 made three-point baskets

Dordt outscores teams 81.9-67.5 and convert 46.2 percent of its field goals and 30.3 percent of its three-point shots. The Defenders allow 38.4 percent field goal shooting and 27.7 from the arc.  Dordt is outrebounding teams 43.7-33.1 and have forced 315 turnovers by steals.

The Defender men are 19-8 this season and 10-7 in the league with three regular season games remaining.

Garrett Franken leads the team with a 15.5 points per game average and 7.5 rebounds with 56 assists and 16 blocks. Jesse Jansma is at 11.9 points per game and is second on the team in made three-point baskets with 45. Cade Bleeker’s average is 10.9 points per game and he gets 4.2 rebounds.  He has made a team high 60 three-point shots and is converting 46.9 percent of his attempts from behind the arc. Zach Bussard and Marcus Winterfeld are at 9.6 and 8.9 points per game and Ben Gesink and Josh Van Lingen score 7.6 and 7.2 respectively. Gesink has lifted his three-point success to 40.5 percent. Chad Barkema is at 10.2 points per game and 5.1 rebounds. Barkema also has 19 steals, 14 blocked shots and 51 assists but Barkema is out indefinitely with a hand injury suffered in the loss to Dakota Wesleyan on January 15.  Jansma leads the Defenders with 70 assists and Dordt has six players with 40 or more assists and seven players who have converted 20 or more three-point shots.

Dordt is outscoring teams 86.0-75.8 and outrebound teams 39.9-34.5.  Dordt also converts 48.1 percent of its field goal tries and 39.0 percent of its three-point shots while limiting teams to 44.4 percent field goal shooting and 35.6 behind the arc.


Briar Cliff lost an 82-71 decision to Midland on Saturday and trailed at every quarter break. Midland was up 19-16 at the end of the first quarter and led 34-28 at the end of the first half. Briar Cliff converted 28-55 field goals and was outrebounded 26-23 and committed 20 turnovers to 18 for Midland. Deitchler scored 22 points and Carley added 18 with Sudmann getting 13 with six rebounds. Midland did take advantage of 20-25 free throw opportunities.

Dordt lost to Concordia 74-56 on Saturday with Karly Gustafson scoring 11 points with seven rebounds and Erika Feenstra scored nine with seven rebounds. Dordt had a 49-41 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over 30 times while forcing 17.

The Briar Cliff men lost to Midland 96-89 on Saturday in Sioux City. Ethan Freidel scored 30 in the loss with seven rebounds. Kleinhesselink added 20 and Lamb had 16. The Chargers were up 50-41 at halftime but were outscored 55-39 in the second half.

The Defender men beat Concordia 86-76 on Saturday behind 21 points by Winterfeld while Franken scored 13 along with Van Lingen. Dordt had a 37-31 rebounding advantage led by Winterfeld and Van Lingen with seven each.    


Dordt and Briar Cliff played on November 23 in Sioux Center and Dordt used a 29-10 advantage in the second quarter to lead 43-25 and then outscored the Chargers 28-16 in the third quarter to get up 71-41 on the way to a 93-58 final. Kreykes had 16 points and Harmsen scored 14. Carley scored 15 for the Chargers and Shannon Sokolowski had eight in the loss. Dordt had a 47-31 rebounding advantage and forced 22 turnovers to 15 for the Defenders.

Dordt beat Briar Cliff in November 82-63. Chad Barkema had 19 and Garrett Franken scored 18 Briar Cliff was led by Jackson Lamb with 25 points and Ethan Freidel had 17 before getting injured. Dordt had a 50-31 rebounding advantage and limited Briar Cliff to 38.6 percent field goal shooting.


The Defenders will host Hastings on Saturday before traveling to Mount Marty on Wednesday, February 19.
