Basketball Returns Home To Face Concordia

The Dordt Defender basketball teams will be at home against Concordia on Saturday, February 8.  The women’s game will start at 2:00 with the men’s game to get underway at 4:00.  The games will be available on KDCR 88.5 FM and online at


The Concordia Bulldogs are 23-2 this season and 16-1 in the GPAC with a loss to Hastings in the league and a non-conference loss to current no. 1 Southeastern (Florida). The Bulldogs have won nine games in a row since the setback to Hastings on January 8.

Grace Barry is scoring 13.5 points per game to lead Concordia and she makes 47.5 percent of her field goals and is averaging nearly six assists per game and she leads the team in steals with 87. Philly Lammers scores 13.1 points per game while converting nearly 50 percent of her field goals and she leads the team in rebounds with a 6.2 average. Mackenzie Koepke tosses in eight points per game. Seven other Bulldogs are averaging between five and eight points per game.

Concordia converts 44.9 percent of its field goals with 33.5 percent success from the three-point line. Concordia allows teams to make 37.6 percent of their field goals and 27.3 percent from the arc. Teams are outrebounding Concordia 42.0-40.3 but Concordia makes up for it by forcing 33 turnovers per game while giving it up 17 times per outing. Concordia has taken away 553 possessions by steals.

The Concordia men are 17-8 overall and 8-7 in the GPAC. Concordia has lost two games in a row after winning 10 out of 11 from December 22 to January 29.

Concordia is outscoring teams 77.4-69 and outrebounding teams 39.1-36.6.  The Bulldogs convert 44.2 percent of their field goals and 35.6 percent of its three-point shots and they limit teams to 41.5 percent from the field and 32.7 from the arc.

Brevin Sloup is scoring 14.6 points per game with four rebounds per game and Carter Kent and Tanner Shuck add 13.4 and 12.6 points per game respectively.  Those three are Concordia’s top three-point threats with Sloup knocking down 65, Kent has 55 and Shuck has 46. Sloup is the leader in assists with 69 in 24 games and Justin Wiersema has 6 2assists and average nine point per game.


The Defenders are 20-5 this season and 12-5 in the GPAC with losses to Morningside (twice), Concordia, Northwestern and Hastings. The Defenders have won six of their last eight.

Erika Feenstra is averaging a team high 18.2 points per game with 6.0 rebounds and she is making 61.2 percent of her field goals and is 109-136 from the free throw line through 25 games played. Rachel Evavold and Karly Gustafson are both in double figures with 10.4 and 10.1 points per game respectively and they have been efficient from the floor with 61.5 and 56.9 percent field goal shooting. Gustafson leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game and Evavold is at 5.4.   Bailey Beckman is at 7.8 points per game off the bench and Gabby Kreykes has a 6.7 average while Jordyn Van Maanen and Mya Chmielewski each average 6.0 points per game. Van Maanen leads the team with 64 assists and Payton Harmsen has 62 to go with a team high 38 three-point shots.

Dordt outscores teams 82.9-67.2 and convert 46.8 percent of its field goals and 30.3 percent of its three-point shots. The Defenders allow 38.5 percent field goal shooting and 27.6 from the arc.  Dordt is outrebounding teams 43.4-32.8 and have forced 306 turnovers by steals.

The Defender men are 18-8 this season and 9-7 in the league with four regular season games remaining.

Garrett Franken leads the team with a 15.6 points per game average and 7.6 rebounds with 55 assists and 16 blocks. Jesse Jansma is at 12.0 points per game and is second on the team in made three-point baskets with 45. Cade Bleeker’s average is 11.0 points per game and he gets 4.2 rebounds.  He has made a team high 59 three-point shots and is converting 47.6 percent of his attempts from behind the arc. Zach Bussard and Marcus Winterfeld are at 9.5 and 8.5 points per game and Ben Gesink and Josh Van Lingen score 7.7 and 7.0 respectively. Gesink has lifted his three-point success to 40.3 percent. Chad Barkema is at 10.2 points per game and 5.1 rebounds. Barkema also has 19 steals, 14 blocked shots and 51 assists but Barkema is out indefinitely with a hand injury suffered in the loss to Dakota Wesleyan on January 15.  Jansma leads the Defenders with 67 assists and Dordt has six players with 40 or more assists. The Defenders have seven players who have converted 20 or more three-point shots.

Dordt is outscoring teams 86.0-75.8 and outrebound teams 40.0-34.6.  Dordt also converts 48.1 percent of its field goal tries and 38.9 percent of its three-point shots while limiting teams to 44.3 percent field goal shooting and 35.3 behind the arc.


The Concordia women were 102-47 winners over Doane on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs led 30-8 after one quarter and 63-20 at halftime. Concordia forced 40 turnovers and limited Doane to 13-42 field goals. The Bulldogs were 42-81 from the field and had a 40-32 rebounding advantage. Claire Cornell had 17 points and 11 rebounds in 18 minutes of reserve play and Lammers had 15 points.

The Defender women lost to Northwestern 91-76 after trailing by three early in the fourth quarter. Erika Feenstra, Rachel Evavold and Bailey Beckman all had 11 points in the loss and Karly Gustafson had 10 points.

The Concordia men lost to Doane 64-59 on Wednesday night in Crete. Concordia was up 28-26 at halftime. Doane built a seven point lead and never relinquished the advantage even though Concordia cut the lead down to one on several occasions. Justin Wiersema had a team high 17 points with 12 rebounds and Brevin Sloup and Tanner Shuck each had 12 points.

The Defender men lost to Northwestern 89-82 and had two brief leads in the second half. Dordt trailed by one with just over three minutes left. Ben Gesink scored 16 and Franken had 15 with nine rebounds.  


Concordia won the January 4 meeting in Seward by a 69-55 margin. Concordia was up 20-14 after one quarter and 41-30 at halftime.  Dordt was within eight to start the fourth quarter but the Bulldogs outscored Dordt 18-12 in the fourth period. Ebby Prewitt scored a season high 13 for the Defenders and Rachel Evavold added nine.  Concordia was led by Riley Sibbel’s career high 26 points as she went 10-15 from the field.

Concordia won the meeting in Seward 91-79. Franken had 20 points in the loss for Dordt and Bussard came off the bench to score 14. Kent had 25 points for Concordia and Shuck added 17 points with five rebounds. Concordia had a 39-38 rebounding advantage and converted 33-65 field goals while holding Dordt to 29-68.


Dordt will travel to Briar Cliff on Wednesday night before hosting Hastings on Saturday, February 15.

Concordia will host Hastings and Mount Marty this week before going on the road for two games the following week to conclude the regular season.
