GPAC Basketball For Women's Basketball Saturday

GAMETIME…

The Defender women’s basketball team will be traveling to Omaha, Nebraska to face the College of Saint Mary on Saturday, January 11 at 2:00 at the Lied Fitness Center on the College of Saint Mary’s campus.  You can hear the game on KDCR 88.5 FM.

THE FOE…  

The College of Saint Mary Flames are 5-12 this season and 2-8 in league play. The Flames secured back to back wins over Doane and Briar Cliff on December 12 and 14 for their two conference wins and recently stopped a three game losing skid with a win over Nebraska Christian on January 7.

The College of Saint Mary has been outscored 75.6-61.6 this season and they get outrebounded 42.6-36.7. The Flames are allowing teams to make 41.1 percent of their shots and convert 35.7 percent of the shots they take.

Lynsey Curran converts 8.8 points per game and Clare Lewandowski is at 8.1 points per game with 5.4 rebounds and she is making 50.5 percent of her field goal attempts. Trista Merrival, Kenzi Hoit and A’leah Davis add 7.2. 7.0 and 6.9 points per game. Curran is the leading three-point threat with 36 made long shots and Merrival and Alyssa Laudato each have 21 made three-point baskets. Madelyn Turner leads the team in assists with 48.

DEFENDER NOTES…

The Defender women are off to a 15-3 mark and stand 7-3. Dordt’s losses in the GPAC are to Morningside, Concordia and Hastings and the Defenders are 8-1 in their last ten games and started the season with a seven game winning string.  

Dordt is converting 48 percent of its field goals and 31.3 percent of its three-point shots.  The Defenders outrebound teams 44.4-32.1 and have forced 21 turnovers per game.

Erika Feenstra scores 19.4 points per game with 6.4 rebounds and she is making 65.4 percent of her field goals. Karly Gustafson scores 10.3 points per game and she snags 6.4 rebounds and she is making 59.5 percent of her field goals. Rachel Evavold adds 10.1 points per game with 5.4 rebounds and she is making 61.9 percent of her field goals. Gabby Kreykes is at 7.7 points per game with a team high 38 steals through 18 games and Bailey Beckman’s average is 6.7 points per game. Payton Harmsen has converted a team high 31 three-point baskets and she has 28 steals while scoring 5.7 points per game.  Jordyn Van Maanen leads the team with 50 assists and Harmsen has 47.

LAST TIME…

College of Saint Mary beat the Nebraska Christian Sentinels on Wednesday night by a 77-56 margin and converted 40 percent of their field goals hile holding Nebraska Christian to 32.1 percent success. Bailey White led the team with 13 points and Madelyn Turner and Davis each had ten points and Turner had five assists. CSM had a 40-36 rebounding advantage and

The Defenders had to overcome a seven point second half deficit and pulled out a 74-71 win over Mount Marty on Wednesday night in Sioux Center. Rachel Evavold had 16 points and six rebounds while Bailey Beckman added 15 and Erika Feenstra scored all 10 of her points in the second half while taking down 10 rebounds. Baylee Tetzlaff came off the bench to score eight points with ten rebounds and two assists and two steals.

HISTORY…

The two teams played twice last season with Dordt winning both contests. The first game was in Omaha on November 17 and Dordt prevailed 82-62 behind 49 percent field goal shooting while limiting the Flames to 33 percent. Dordt also had a 53-34 rebounding advantage. Feenstra and Evavold each had 26 and 13 points with 13 and 11 rebounds respectively.

The teams played again on January 19 in Sioux Center and the Defenders were 91-67 winners. Rachel Evavold had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Feenstra had 17 and 11 while Annie Rhinesmith chipped in with 16. Dordt converted 49 percent of its field goals and allowed 35 percent success.  Dordt again had a 53-39 rebounding edge. Corryne Millett scored a game high 23 points on 11-21 field goal shooting.

NEXT…

The Defenders will begin the second half of the GPAC season on Wednesday night on the road against Dakota Wesleyan and will return home to face Morningside on Saturday, January 18. The Defenders have 11 games remaining after the CSM contest.
