Basketball Hosts Mount Marty Wednesday

The Defender women’s and men’s basketball teams will be hosting Mount Marty in women’s and men’s basketball with the women starting at 6:00 and the men’s game will follow at about 8:00.  You can hear the games on KDCR 88.5 FM and watch it live  


The Mount Marty women are 9-6 this season and 2-6 in GPAC play with their  conference wins over Jamestown and the College of Saint Mary. The Lancers are 5-3 in their last eight games and have won three of their last four with the loss being a narrow 64-62 home loss to Morningside on January 2.

Jamie Tebben leads the team with a 12.1 points per game average and she has a 7.3 rebounds per game average. She is making 46 percent of her field goals and 35 percent of her three-point shots.  She is second on the team wit 26 steals in 15 games. Karlee McKinney scores 11.4 points per game with 2.8 rebounds and Ali Kuca is good for 9.9 points per game and Molly Koisti scores 7.3 points per game.  Hannah Williams grabs 5.5 rebounds per game.

Mount Marty is averaging is getting outscored 66.2-65.6 and they are getting outrebounded 40.1-36.4.  The Lancers convert 39.5 percent of its field goals and 31.3 percent of its three-point shots. Teams are making 37.2 percent of their field goals against the Lancers and Mount Marty commits 19 turnovers per game and force just under 18 per outing.

The Mount Marty men are 14-3 this season and 6-2 in the GPAC in a dramatic turnaround from recent history. The Lancers have losses to York, Northwestern and Morningside this year and have won nine of their games by single digits.

Chris King scores a team high 21.6 points per game and is making 51.3 percent of his field goals and 44 percent of his three-point shots (59-134).  King is also second on the team in assists with 39. Colby Johnson scores 17.4 points per game and is converting 58 percent of his field goals and he is taking down 5.8 rebounds per game. Jordan Johnson adds 12.9 points per game and he has a team high 61 assists in 16 games. Jailen Billings is averaging 8.1 points per contest with 38 made three-point shots and is converting 42 percent of his three-point shots.

Mount Marty is averaging 90.2 points per game and allow 78.2.  The Lancers are getting outrebounded 37.1-33 but have forced 14 turnover per game while committing just eight per game. Todd Lorensen’s first Mount Marty team is making 49.1 percent of their shots and 40.2 percent of their three-point baskets. Over half of Mount Marty’s field goal attempts have been three-point shots and the Lancers are 240-597 this season.


The Defender women are off to a 14-3 mark and stand 6-3 in the GPAC with wins over Dakota Wesleyan (88-86), Northwestern (92-84), Briar Cliff (93-58), Jamestown (77-58),Midland (98-62) and Doane (80-47).  Dordt’s losses in the GPAC are to Morningside, Concordia and Hastings.

Dordt is converting 48.2 percent of its field goals and 31.9 percent of its three-point shots.  The Defenders outrebound teams 44.6-32.1 and have forced 22 turnovers per game.

Erika Feenstra scores 20.0 points per game with 6.4 rebounds and she is making 65.7 percent of her field goals. Karly Gustafson scores 10.3 points per game and she snags 6.4 rebounds and she is making 59.5 percent of her field goals. Rachel Evavold adds 9.7 points per game with 5.3 rebounds and she is making 62.8 percent of her field goals. Gabby Kreykes is at 7.7 points per game with a team high 38 steals through 17 games and Bailey Beckman’s average is 6.3 points per game. Payton Harmsen has converted a team high 31 three-point baskets and she has 27  steals while scoring 6.2 points per game.  Jordyn Van Maanen leads the team with 47 assists and Harmsen has 46.

The Defender men are 13-5 this season and 5-4 in the GPAC.  Dordt’s losses in the league are to Jamestown (110-107 ot), Dakota Wesleyan (79-78), Concordia (91-79) and Morningside (96-88). Dordt has won nine of its last 11 games after starting the year 4-3.

Garrett Franken scores 15.4 points per game and Jesse Jansma is at 13.2 points per game. Cade Bleeker and Chad Barkema are scoring 11.4 and 10.4 points per game  and Barkema is making 51.1 percent of his field goals and he takes down 5.4 rebounds per game. Bleeker is making 50 percent of his field goals and 48.9 percent of his three-point shots.  Franken leads the team with 8.2 rebounds per game. Marcus Winterfeld is coming off the bench to get 8.1 points per game and Zach Bussard has returned to action after missing a month of play and is averaging 9.0 points per game. Josh Van Lingen and Ben Gesink are at 7.2 and 6.4 points per game.   Jansma is the team leader in assists at 2.5 per game.

Dordt is averaging 86.4 points per game and allowing 76.4.  The Defenders own a 41.8-36.7 rebounds per game average and the Defenders are converting 46.8 percent of their field goals and 38.8 percent of their three-point shots. Teams are making 43.7 percent against the Defenders and 33.6 percent of their three-point shots. 


The Lancer women overcame a 33-29 halftime deficit to win 72-66 in Omaha on Sautrday. The Lancers outscored the Flames 25-11 in the third quarter on the way to the six point win. Ali Kuca scored a game high 23 points and Molly Koisti had 15 points and Jamie Tebben scored 11 with 11 rebounds.

The Defender women battled back from a double digit deficit to Concordia on Saturday to take a brief lead with six minutes remaining in their contest.  The Bulldogs responded with a double digit run and won by a 69-55 verdict. Ebby Prewitt had a season high 13 points and Rachel Evavold added nine points with seven rebounds.

The Mount Marty men stepped outside of conference play with an 85-79 home win over Waldorf on Saturday. Colby Johnson had a game high 26 points with seven rebounds and four assists and Chris King added 25 points and five rebounds. The Lancers had just four turnovers in the game to make up for getting outrebounded 38-29.

The Defender men had an early 10 point lead in the second half but Concordia battled back and took a 91-79 final. Dordt had the lead down to three-points with five minutes remaining but Concordia converted three straight three-point baskets and Dordt was unable to challenge in falling for the fourth time in league play. Franken had 20 points with 11 rebounds and five assists and Zach Bussard came off the bench to score 14 and Chad Barkema had 11.


Dordt was an 87-75 winner in Yankton on November 8, 2018, using a 30-14 advantage in the third quarter to take control of the game. Annie Rhinesmith led the Defenders with 18 and Evavold had 17 with six rebounds. Karissa Chamley scored 17 with six rebounds and Kuca had 16 in the loss. Six weeks later the Defenders were steady in outscoring Mount Marty 81-66 in Sioux Center. Feenstra had a team high 19 points for the Defenders and Evavold had 15. Mount Mary was led by Karlee McKinney with 20.

The Dordt men had a 37-18 lead at halftime of their first meeting with Mount Marty in Yankton on November 7 and went on to win 81-56. Barkema scored 17 and Franken had 15 in the win while Chase Altenburg scored 12 for the Lancers. The teams played again on January 16 and Dordt prevailed in Sioux Center 95-64. Alec Henrickson scored 19 in the win and Franken scored 14. Jailen Billings had game high 24 in the loss.


Dordt will be on the road this Saturday with a women’s game at the College of Saint Marty at 2:00 and the men will play Nebraska Christian at 4:00.  Both games are played in Omaha, Nebraska.  The women’s game is played at the College of Saint Mary campus and the men’s game will be played at D.J. Sokol Arena on Creighton’s campus.
