Basketball Hosts First Games Of 2020

The Defender women’s and men’s basketball teams will be hosting Doane on Thursday, January 2 in GPAC play.  The women’s game will start at 6:00 with the men’s game to start at about 8:00. The games can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and will be streamed live at


The Doane women are 1-11 overall this season and 0-7 in the GPAC.  The Tigers’ win this season was a 65-56 double overtime win over Haskell (Kansas).  Doane started the season with seven straight losses and have lost four in a row since the November 30 win over Haskell.

Haylee Heits is leading the team with a 12.0 points per game average and she is leading the team in rebounds as well with a 6.8 average.  She has shot a team high 52 free throws and is converting 75 percent of those attempts. Tayla Nulty converts 34.9 percent of her field goals for 10.5 points per game and she tops the team with 29 made three-point baskets. Halle Konz scores 9.5 points per game and her rebounding average is 6.3 per game and she is making 49 percent of her field goals this season. McKenzie Beach is averaging just over two assists per game along with Bailey Zarybnicky for team honors.

The Tigers are allowing 83.4 points per game while scoring 54.7 and they are getting outrebounded 43.1-35.4.  Doane’s opponents are making 45 percent of their field goal attempts while limiting the Tigers to 33.5 percent success from the field.  The Tigers have struggled with turnovers this year and commit 24 turnovers per game while forcing 17.

Doane is 4-11 overall and 0-6 in the GPAC with a pair of wins over Sterling (Kansas) and York (Nebraska) on November 7 and 9 and wins over Presentation (South Dakota) and Dakota State (South Dakota)on November 22 and 23. Five of Doane’s losses are by single digits and the Tigers also lost a double overtime decision to Concordia on the road on December 4.  Since the back to back wins over Presentation and Dakota State the Tigers have lost three in a row.

Anthony Laravie leads the Tigers with a 17.0 points per game average to go with 4.1 rebounds and nearly two assists per game. Laravie has converted a team high 43 three-point baskets this season and makes 44.3 percent of his long shots.   Miguel Lopez is good for 9.7 points per game with 7.5 rebounds and Isiah Sykes is scoring 8.3 points per game.

Doane is scoring 70.6 points per game and allows 76.2 points per game.  The Tigers are getting 37.5 rebounds per game and allow opponents 37.3.  Doane is making 43 percent of its field goals while surrendering 46 percent success.


The Defender women are off to 13-2 record and stand 5-2 in the GPAC with wins over Dakota Wesleyan (88-86), Northwestern (92-84), Briar Cliff (93-58), Jamestown (77-58) and Midland (98-62).  Dordt’s losses in the GPAC are to Morningside and Hastings.

Dordt is converting 49.4 percent of its field goals and 32.8 percent of its three-point shots.  Dordt also gets to the free throw line 22 times per game and converts 74 percent of its free throws. Dordt also outrebounds teams 43.6-31.1 and has forced 21 turnovers per game while giving the ball up 19 times per game.

Erika Feenstra scores 21.3 points per game with 6.6 rebounds and she is making 67.2 percent of her field goals. Karly Gustafson scores 10.8 points per game and she snags 6.5 rebounds and she is making 63.6 percent of her field goals. Rachel Evavold adds 9.8 points per game with 5.2 rebounds and she is making 63.5 percent of her field goals. Gabby Kreykes is at 7.5 points per game with a team high 34 steals through 15 games and Bailey Beckman’s average is 6.9 points per game. Payton Harmsen has converted a team high 30 three-point baskets and she has 24 steals while scoring 6.3 points per game.

The Defender men are 12-4 this season and 4-3 in the GPAC.  Dordt’s losses in the league are to Jamestown (110-107 ot), Dakota Wesleyan (79-78) and Morningside (96-88). Dordt has won eight of its last nine games after starting the year 4-3.

Garrett Franken scores 15.6 points per game and Jesse Jansma is at 14.0 points per game. Cade Bleeker and Chad Barkema are scoring 10.8 and 10.6 points per game  and Barkema is making 51.7 percent of his field goals and he takes down 5.7 rebounds per game. Franken takes down 8.1 rebounds per game and Marcus Winterfeld is coming off the bench to get 8.4 points per game. Josh Van Lingen and Ben Gesink are at 7.4 and 6.5 points per game.   Jansma is the team leader in assists at 2.5 per game.

Dordt is averaging 86.6 points per game and allowing 76.9.  The Defenders own a 41.6-36.5 rebounds per game average and the Defenders are converting 46.8 percent of their field goals.


Doane has been off since December 14 when the Tigers lost to Dakota Wesleyan 98-41. Wesleyan raced to a 29-11 first quarter lead and then outscored Doane 27-4 in the second quarter. Heits had 15 points to lead Doane and she had six rebounds.

The Defender women have been idle since December 14 when Dordt went on the road and lost to Hastings 88-69. Feenstra scored a game high 20 points with seven rebounds and Mya Chmielewski added 14 points off the bench with Payton Harmsen adding 11 and Karly Gustafson had 10.

Doane’s men haven’t played since December 14 when the Tigers lost on the road to Dakota Wesleyan 79-51.  The Tigers were down 39-31 at halftime and allowed Wesleyan 40 points in the second half. Laravie had 13 points and Joe Burt had 12 points. Doane converted 33 percent of its field goals in the loss.

Dordt took a 70-59 win from UC-Merced on Saturday, December 21. A 14 point run by the Defenders midway through the second half of the game put Dordt in control. Barkema had 13 points and eight rebounds and Jansma and Franken had 12 points each with Bleeker tossing in 11 points. Jansma had five assists with Dordt getting 19 assists out of 27 total field goals.


Dordt’s women won both games last season with Doane by double digit margins.  The Defenders were 86-69 winners on January 5 with Rachel Evavold scoring 20 and Annie Rhinesmith added 17 points with ten rebounds. Haylee Heits scored 24 in the loss and the Defenders held Doane to 38 percent shooting while making 48 percent themselves.

On February 2 the Defender women were 64-51 winners in Sioux Center.  Feenstra had 17 and Evavold had 10. Dordt needed a 34-20 second half advantage to secure the win.

The Doane men won the January 5 meeting in Crete by a 61-59 margin with Alec Henrickson scoring 14 and Chad Barkema had 11. Doane’s Koh Flippin led all players with 16. Dordt had a 46-34 rebounding advantage and the most of the second half before relinquishing the lead with 1:05 left in the game. The Defenders had three shots to tie or take the lead in the closing minute but were unable to get any to drop.

The February 2 game in Sioux Center was decided on a buzzer beater after the Defenders trailed by as many as 11 in the second half. The Defenders forced a missed shot with :05 left and Garrett Franken made a shot on the run to secure the 82-80 win. Henrickson and Franken had 16 each and Josh Van Lingen scored 15 with 10 rebounds. Flippin led all players with 25 points and Nick Kornieck chipped in with 17.


Dordt is back in action on Saturday, January 4 at Concordia in Seward, Nebraska and will host Mount Marty on Wednesday, January 8.
