Basketball Teams In Orange City For Weekend

The Defender basketball teams will be competing at the Northwestern Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9 in Orange City, Iowa.  The Defender women will face Haskell and Presentation, in that order, at 11:30 AM and 10:00 AM respectively.

The Defender men will face Viterbo and Ozark Christian on successive days at 1:30 and noon.

Haskell is 3-2 this season with wins over Graceland, Judson and Calumet St. Joseph. Haskell is averaging 75.1 points per game and allows 66.1 points per outing. Haskell is getting outrebounded 43.1-32.7 and are converting 42.5 percent of its field goals while limiting teams to 38.5 percent success.

Tiana Guillory averages 20.9 points per game with seven rebounds per game and Sierra Penn is scoring 17.9 points per game and Tia Woods is at 12.1 points per contest.  All three of those have made at least 14 three-point baskets this season and are converting right around 40 percent of their three-point attempts.

Presentation is 1-3 this season with a win over Providence and losses to Mount Marty, Dakota Wesleyan and Jamestown.

The Saints average 55.5 points per game and allow 71.5.  Teams are outrebounding the Aberdeen, South Dakota based school 50.8-41.5 and the Saints are making 31.2 percent of its field goals while allowing 37.3 percent success for opponents.

Jada Campbell is averaging 17.5 points per game and she makes 49.1 percent of her field goals. Leannah Vitalis scores 14.0 points per game and has a 9.0 rebounds per game which is second on the team to Campbell’s 14. Haylie Vallery adds 6.3 points per game.

Viterbo is 1-1 this season with a loss to Mount Mercy and a win over Holy Family.  The VHawks outscore teams 76-62 and outrebound teams 40.5-34.5.  Viterbo also converts 42 percent of its field goals.

Noah Fredrickson averages 17.5 points per game and has made 10-21 three-point shots. Tyree Young averages 14.5 points per game and grabs seven rebounds. Jack Monis tosses in 10.5 points per game and six rebounds and Nolan Martin scores eight points per game.

Ozark Christian is 0-2 in games we have results for—a 103-56 to Southwestern and a 93-78 loss to MidAmerica Nazarene. Miles Dressler scored 13 points in both games.


Dordt is 4-0 this season and has a 92.3 points per game average and allows 54.0 points per contest. The Defenders outrebound teams 44.8-30.3 and convert 51.6 percent of their field goals and have forced 110 turnovers while giving it up 78 times.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 26.8 points per game with 6.3 rebounds and she is converting 74.1 percent of her field goals. Gabby Kreykes and Rachel Evavold each average 10.0 points per game. Kreykes is grabbing 5.3 rebounds per game and Karly Gustafson is averaging eight points per game with 5.5 rebounds and Bailey Beckman is at seven points per game.

The Defender men are 2-1 this season with wins over Waldorf and Valley City State and a loss to Mayville State. Dordt is outscoring teams 88.7-78.3 this season and outrebound teams 41.3-33.7.  Dordt is converting 45.5 percent of its field goal attempts and allows 45.5 percent success. The Defenders have made 25 three-point shots and have allowed teams to convert 23-61.

Garrett Franken is scoring 16.7 points per game with 10 rebounds and he is making 42.6 percent of his field goals. Zach Bussard is averaging 14.7 points per game with six rebounds and Jesse Jansma’s average is 12.3. Josh Van Lingen has come off of the bench to score 8.7. Ben Gesink and Jansma each have eight assists so far and Jansma has a team high seven made three-point baskets this season.


Haskell was a 90-65 winner over Calumet St. Joseph on November 2 behind 25 points form Guillory and Bates had 13 points. Haskell made 36-80 field goals and was outrebounded by a slight 41-40 margin.

Presentation lost to Jamestown on Tuesday night, November 5, 78-53. Jamestown got out to a 47-16 lead at halftime but Presentation had a 37-31 advantage in the second half. Jada Campbell had 18 points and ten rebounds in the loss.

The Defender women beat Rochester (Michigan) on Saturday night in Chicago by a 70-57 margin. Feenstra had 26 points and ten rebounds. Evavold and Gustafson each had nine points and Kreykes added eight with seven rebounds.

Viterbo beat Holy Family (Wisconsin) on Tuesday night 79-50 as Fredrickson scored 16 and was 5-10 from the three-point line. Cunitz scored 12 points and the VHawks had a 40-36 rebound advantage and converted 43.5 percent of its field goals.

Ozark Christian lost the MidAmerica Nazarene 93-78 on Tuesday night.  Ozark Christian got 16 points from Deion Clark and 13 each from Miles Dressler and Nicholas Sarin. Dressler also had seven rebounds while Clark had five rebounds and five assists.

The Dordt men lost to Mayville State 96-80 with Franken scoring 24 with 11 rebounds and Bussard had 20 points and seven rebounds.  The Defenders struggled from the arc where they made 3-17 attempts and were outrebounded as a team 40-34.


The Defender women are 1-0 against Haskell with a 79-74 win during the 2001-02 season being the only result on record.

The Defender women lead the series with Presentation 3-0. The last meeting was on November 11 when the Defenders were 87-51 winners over the Saints in Orange City. Annie Rhinesmith scored 22 points and Evavold added 12 while Erika Feenstra, Payton Harmsen and Kenzie Bousema each had 11 points.

Dordt and Viterbo have split four meetings in men’s basketball dating back to the first meeting between the two in 2001-02. The most recent contest was played on December 28 with Dordt winning in a game hosted by Northwestern 73-69. Bussard came off the bench to score 16 and Alec Henrickson added 14 along with Jesse Jansma. Jason Tichy scored 17 for the VHawks who trailed 30-28 at halftime.

This will be the first meeting between Dordt and Ozark Christian. 


The Dordt basketball teams will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, November 13 and will travel to face Morningside on Saturday, November 16.
