Dordt University has hired Dr. Carrie Groenewold to fill a newly-created, endowed chair position in the music department. Groenewold’s titles will be “Joan Ringerwole Chair of Church Music and Organ Studies” and “University Organist.”

Dordt based its decision to create the new chair on the heritage and history of the music department.

“Professors like Dr. Joan Ringerwole, Emeritus Professor of Organ, built a strong and internationally recognized organ department here at Dordt,” says Dr. John MacInnis, associate professor of music. “Looking at our resources and where we have excelled historically, it makes sense to bring on board someone like Dr. Groenewold, a skilled, multi-talented musician with deep roots in the Reformed tradition.”

Groenewold has received degrees from some of the most prominent organ and church music programs in the country, including the University of Notre Dame.

“I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Groenewold in 2017 when our campus hosted a summer ‘Pipe Organ Encounter’ for young organists drawn from across the US,” MacInnis says. “She is an insightful and wise teacher, and we are blessed to have her join our Music Department.”

Starting in the fall 2019 semester, Groenewold will also be in charge of recruiting efforts for the music department.

“Dr. Groenewold brings an engaging personality that will light up the classroom as she trains young organists as lead worshippers,” says Brandon Huisman, vice president for enrollment and marketing. “We are thrilled to have her representing Dordt University and confident she will equip a generation of strong musicians to enthusiastically serve the church.”
