Softball Faces College of Saint Mary Saturday

Dordt will travel to Omaha, Nebraska to face the College of Saint Mary on Saturday, April 13.  The games will start at 1:00 and were originally scheduled to be played in Sioux Center but were moved due to west field conditions.


The College of Saint Mary is 10-21 this season and 3-7 in the GPAC.  The Flames were 9-1 winners over Midland on Tuesday, April 9 and they swept Briar Cliff on April 5.  The College of Saint Mary is 3-3 in its last six games.

The Flames are batting .266 as a team and are led by Brittney Banks with a .417 batting average with a team high five homeruns and she has 40 hits and 22 runs scored. Alicia Baca is batting .352 with eight doubles and 13 runs batted in and Whitney Chamberlain leads the team with 19 runs batted in and has 29 hits while Baca has 32.

Kelsey Goodban is 8-6 on the mound with 81 innings pitched and a 3.60 earned run average. Abby Straight is 2-8 in 68 innings pitched and she has 59 strikeouts while Goodban has 77.


The Defenders are 12-15 this season and 6-6 and are 2-4 in their last six games after dropping a pair of one run games to the GPAC leaders, Midland, on Saturday..

Rachel Evavold is batting .394 with 26 hits and seven doubles and two homeruns with a .591 slugging percentage. Hailey Heeringa has 24 hits and is batting .289 with six doubles and Marissa Vanden Berg has 23 hits with two homeruns and Carley De Roin and Jessica Oules have 17 and 18 hits respectively. Dordt has a .233 batting average while teams are batting .322 against the Defenders.

Tianna Soodsma is 5-5 with a 2.77 earned run average and she has pitched 81 innings with 49 strikeouts. Rachel Evavold is 4-3 with 28 strikeouts and 43 innings pitched.


Rachel Evavold (110) and Hailey Heeringa (103) both joined the 100 hit club earlier this week and Marissa Vanden Berg moved into 18th all-time in hits with her 125th hit last week and she is two shy of Mandy Visser and Michal Huizenga with 127.

With her win on Wednesday over Dakota Wesleyan Tianna Soodsma earned her 42nd win and is 3rd all-time to Ruth Draayer (1985-88) in 2nd with 47 and Dawn Van Kley (2000-03) is on top of the list with 60.


The Defenders beat the Flames last season on April 12, 2018 by scores of 3-1 and 6-0 in Omaha. Rachel Evavold was the winner in game one with three hits allowed and six strikeouts and Hailey Heeringa had a homerun. Tianna Soodsma pitched a four-hit shutout in game two with three strikeouts and issued one walk  Midland won the April 4 games 2-1 and 3-0 and then the Warriors took a 3-1 and 0-3 pair of wins in post-season play on May 5 to advance to the GPAC Championship Series. Evavold and De Roin had three and two hits respectively with De Roin had three runs batted in.


The Defenders will host Morningside on Monday, April 16 beginning at 4:00.
