Volleyball Opens Post-Season Play

Dordt will travel to Parkville, Missouri today for the first round of the American Midwest/Great Plains/Kansas league at 3:00.  The winner advances to play next weekend in the semifinals of the tournament. Results will be posted at and and also at after the match is complete.  


The Park Pirates are 18-3 and finished second in the league with a 9-3 record.

Mike Talamantes’s team averages 12.89 kills per set with a .279 kill efficiency.  Felipe Guirau averages 3.75 kills per set with a .288 kill efficiency and Andrea Maggio is good for 3.03 kills per outing. Luciano Bucci averages 10.74 assists and has 20 service aces.  Maggio is the team leader in aces with 42 and Arthur Dekker has 34 aces for a team that has 125 and has allowed 57.

Park’s losses are to Missouri Baptist (twice) and Ottawa.  The Pirates are 11-1 since a February 21 loss to Ottawa.


The Defenders are 5-15 this season and stand 1-11 in the American Midwest/Great Plains/Kansas league.

Ben Tiemersma is averaging 3.76 kills per set with a .220 kill efficiency and he has eight solo and 22 assisted blocks. Garrett Vander Zee has a 2.89 kills per set average and he gets to 1.7 digs per set. Shavon Barker’s kill average is 1.00 and he has 47 assisted blocks and eight solo blocks. Tyler Postma averages 6.64 assists per set and has seven solo and 29 assisted blocks and he averages 1.52 digs per outing. Austin Clark has a 5.49 assists per set average and Austen Scammon leads the team with 3.16 digs per set.

Dordt averages 9.8 kills per set and allows 12.74.  Dordt gets 1.82 points per set on blocks and allow 1.68. Teams have 89 ace serves against the Defenders and Dordt has 63 aces this season.


The winner of the match advances to the semifinal of the tournament on Friday, April 5.


Dordt lost to Park on March 23 by scores of 19-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-11 in Sioux Center. Tiemersma had nine kills and Vander Zee had four in the loss. Tyler Postma and Austin Clark had 11 and eight assists each. Austen Scammon had 14 digs for the Defenders. Park was topped by Guira with 15 kills and Felipe Chagas added 11 with Luciano Bucci putting up 48 assists.
