(Thursday, March 28; Sioux Center, Iowa) Three Dordt track and field athletes have been named Great Plains Athletic Conference Athletes-of-the-Week for competitions March 17-23.
Cori De Jong (Freshman; Sheldon, Iowa), Matthew Van Eps (Sophomore; Prinsburg, Minnesota) and Ike Van Kempen (Senior; Jenison, Michigan) earned their respective athlete-of-the-week honor for their performances at the Wildcat Invite hosted by Wayne State in Wayne, Nebraska.
Van Kempen was the men’s field-athlete-of-the-week after finishing second in the discus with a throw of 160-10 which was good for automatic qualification to the NAIA National Championship and ranks 3rd in the NAIA. Van Kempen also threw the hammer 153-11 which was 10th in the event and ranks 16th in the NAIA. Van Kempen tops the GPAC performance list in the discus and he’s third in the hammer.
Van Eps is the men's track athlete-of-the-week and won the 800 meters in 1:56.04 and his time is currently good for 12th in the NAIA. Van Eps also ran a leg on the 4x400 and ran a 49 split for the foursome that won the race in 3:22.14. His time in the 800 currently tops the GPAC performance list.
De Jong earned the women's field-athlete-of-the-week cleared 5-1.75 in the high jump which was second in the event. The performance currently ranks 17th in the NAIA and is the best early season performance in the GPAC.
Dordt is scheduled to compete at the Buena Vista Invite on March 30 and will host an event on Saturday, April 6.
