Baseball Begins Play In Arizona

Dordt is scheduled to travel to Tucson, Arizona for 10 games March 9-15.  The Defenders will face Jamestown and Mayville State at 11:30 and 3:00 on Saturday.  Dordt plays Southwest Minnesota State on Monday at 5:00 and 8:30 and then face Lourdes on March 12 in a doubleheader starting at 2:00.  Dordt is not scheduled to play games on Wednesday, March 13. 


Jamestown-The Jimmies are 6-6 this season and have gone 4-3 since getting to Arizona last week.  Drake Pilat is batting .378 with 14 hits and three doubles and Kaleb Binstock has a .333 batting average with two homeruns and eight runs batted in.  Zach Zurbrugg is batting .313 and has two homeruns with eight runs batted in as well.  Binstock is 2-2 on the mound with a 2.35 earned run average and has 14 strikeouts in seven innings of work. Dakota Nelson has pitched 17 innings and has a 1.59 earned run average with 12 strikeouts. Dru Fitz is the team leader in strikeouts with 15.

Mayville State-The Comets are 4-3 this season and are led by Brady Nygaard with a .462 batting average and two homeruns with eight runs batted in and a .731 slugging percentage and he has a team high seven stolen bases. Kyle Maunahan has nine hits with a .360 batting average and Adrian Zubia has three doubles this season to top the team. Four different pitchers have a win each and three have thrown between nine and ten innings. Craig Broadman is 1-1 with a 1.93 earned run average and has eight strikeouts.  He’s the only pitcher with more than one decision. Tait Ludwick has 12 strikeouts this season.

Southwest Minnesota State-Southwest Minnesota is playing in its season opener this weekend. Last year the Mustangs posted a 17-23 overall record and a 12-18 Northern Sun mark. Ben Heichel batted .349 with 53 hits and 35 runs scored with five homeruns and 31 runs batted in. Shane Sellner had 48 hits and 25 runs batted in and Jayden Fleck had 33 runs batted in with a team high six homeruns.

Nebraska Wesleyan-Nebraska Wesleyan is 0-4 this season and has been outscored 38-16.  Aaron Nichols has a .313 batting average with five hits and a pair of stolen bases. Will Watkins is batting .267 with a homerun and three runs batted in and four hits while Derek Kolbush and Tyler Winterstein each have four hits. Connor Cech is the only pitcher with more than five innings of work and is 0-1 with a 4.50 earned run average to go with three strikeouts. Tucker McHugh has a team high five strikeouts.

Lourdes-Lourdes is 5-1 this season and is led by Caleb Gallo with eight hits and a .471 batting average. Michael Davis is batting .429 with six hits and a homerun. Adam Hoyos is 2-0 in three appearances and Zach Brown has a team high 13 strikeouts in 11 innings pitched.


The Defenders are 1-2 this season after playing three games in early February against Hannibal Lagrange.  Logan Cline has a team high five hits in three games and Jason Holwerda has four hits.  Cline has a team high seven runs batted in and three other players have two hits each. Isaac Vander Hart is 1-0 in five innings pitched and Luke Drooger pitched four innings and has a 2.25 earned run average and was not involved in the decision in his first outing of the season.


Dordt will play a pair of doubleheaders in GPAC play on Thursday and Friday, March 14 and 15 against Morningside in Tucson, Arizona.
