Track National Championship Recap

The final day of the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships was highlighted by a pair of all-American peformances for the Defenders.  Dordt’s Lucas Van Eps ran the 600 meters in 1:19.16 and finished fifth in the field.  Tre Hinds of Wayland Baptist won the event in 1:17.42.  Van Eps adds the fifth place finish the runner-up finish in the 4x800 he helped secure the night before.  Eric Steiger claimed eighth place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:07.07.  Steiger took the final all-American spot in the event.

Day two on Friday saw Ike Van Kempen continue his strong, consistent indoor season with a throw of 19.01 meters in the weight throw and fourth place for all-American status.  Moments later Matthew Van Eps ran a 1:19.34 in the 600 meters and has the second fastest time in the prelims heading into the finals on Saturday. The men's 4x800 finished second in the finals with a time of 7:43.42.

Day one of the event had Eric Steiger qualifying for the finals in the 5,000 meters and the men's 4x800 meter relay team of Anthony Ghiorso, David Temte, Jebadiah Merkle and Matt Van Eps ran the fastest time in the prelims to qualify for the finals on Friday.

The championship event continues through Saturday at the Sanford Jackrabbit Sports Complex. 

Thursday, February 28
Joscelyn Wind finished 15th in the pentathlon with 3,070 points.

Eric Steiger finished 9th in the prelims of the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:03.84.  He was fifth in the second heat with seven out of the 12 finalists running; 5,000 meters semifinals.

The women’s 4x800 relay team finished 11th in the semifinals in 9:34.46 and will not qualify for the finals.  Dordt ran fifth in heat two.

The men’s 4x800 relay team recorded the fastest time in the semifinals with a time of 7:43.68 and overtook

Wayland Baptist in the final 50 meters.  The finals of the race will be run on Friday night.

The men’s 4x400 relay team recorded a time of 3:17.53 in the second of three heats and had the 11th fastest time in the prelims. The group will not qualify for the finals.

The men’s distance medley relay ran 7th in the first heat of the prelims and 12th overall in 10:36.07 and will not qualify for the finals in the event.

Friday, March 1
Ike Van Kempen finishes fourth in the men’s weight throw as he throws 19.01 meters on his final throw of the competition to establish a school record.  

Matthew Van Eps finished the men’s 600 meter prelims with a time of 1:19.34 which was second in heat two and was the second fastest time in the prelims.  He’ll run in the eight-man finals on Saturday at 1:35.

Hailey Pullman finished sixth in heat two with a time of 3:00.03 in the women’s 1000 meters and had the 9th fastest time of the prelims.  She missed out of the final spot in the finals by six-tenths of a second.

The men’s 4x800 team ran a 7:43.42 and claimed runner-up honors.

Saturday, March 2

Joscelyn Wind finished 16th in the high jump by clearing 1.57 meters.  

Matthew Van Eps was fifth in the men’s 600 meters finals in 1:19.16 and earns all-American status.

Eric Steiger ran eighth in the men’s 5000 meter finals and had a time of 15:07.07
