On Tuesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m., Dordt College’s Campus-Community Band, Fourth Avenue Singers, and Fourth Avenue Band will perform a concert in Dordt’s B.J. Haan Auditorium. The choral ensembles will perform on Wednesday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium.
The Campus-Community Band will kick off the March 5 concert, performing works by Francis Clifford, Thomas Doss, Adam Gorb, Frank Ticheli, and Jared Spears. Clifford’s “Millennium Fanfare,” and Spears’s “At a Dixieland Jazz Funeral,” will be the band’s feature pieces.
The second half of the concert will feature Dordt’s two jazz groups: Fourth Avenue Singers, formerly called Kantorei, and Fourth Avenue Band, formerly named Jazz Band. The jazz portion of the concert will feature covers of big band standards, Beatles’ tunes, and Broadway musical favorites by composers and songwriters like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and John Lennon.
The choral performance on March 6 will feature Bella Voce, a women’s chorus, in addition to Chorale and Concert Choir. The choirs will explore a wide range of repertoire including “Five Mystical Songs” for baritone and choir by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Randall Thompson’s remarkable “Alleluia,” Baroque masterpieces, spirituals, popular song covers, and more. Other popular composers featured on this program will be Shawn Kirchner, Dan Forrest, Stephen Paulus, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
