Basketball Concludes Regular Season

Dordt will travel to Hastings on Saturday, February 16 in a GPAC women’s and men’s basketball play. The women’s game will start at 2:00 with the men to follow at 4:00. The games can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and online at

The Hastings women are 17-11 this season and 12-9 in GPAC play and have been as hot as any team in the league for the last month as it has gone 7-1 since January 19 when the Broncos beat Dakota Wesleyan in overtime.  The win started a six game winning streak that ended in a 97-75 loss to Northwestern on February 9. 

The Broncos are averaging 75.5 points per game and allow 68.9.  The Broncos are converting 42.6 percent of their field goals while allowing opponents to convert 40.6.  Hastings also owns a slight 36.4-35.0 rebounding advantage and have forced 586 turnovers through 28 games while giving up 502.

Shandra Farmer is the leading scorer with a 15.5 points per game average to go with 3.0 rebounds and she is making 47.6 percent of her field goals.  She missed eight games midway through the season from December 1 through January 16. Mackenzie Willicott is good for 10.6 points per game and Gabby Grasso has converted 8.6 points per game and Emma Grenfell 8.4. Farmer leads the team with 34 made three-point baskets and her success rate is 42 percent. Grenfell leads the team with 74 assists in 28 games and Farmer has 50 in 20 games.

The Hastings men are 18-11 overall and 9-10 in the league and has won four of the last five games.

Bart Hiscock tops the team with a 17.9 points per game average to go with 8.0 rebounds with a 49.3 field goal percentage. Kevin Miller adds 16.2 points per game and Brendan Lipovsky is adding 10.6 points per game.  Shane Chamberlain and Zack Johnson have 54 and 51 made three-point baskets each and Hiscock and Miller each have 35.

Hastings is outscoring teams 85.1-79.4 and outrebound teams 37.8-35.  The Broncos make 47.6 percent of their field goal chances and allow teams to make 43.8. Hastings is converting 35 percent of its three-point shots while allowing 35.5.


The Defender women are 20-9 overall and 13-8 in the GPAC. The Defenders its program best 20th game on Wednesday night with a home victory over Briar Cliff.

Dordt is averaging 82.1 points per game with a 69.3 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 46.3-35.8 and are converting 43.9 percent of its field goals while allowing 37.5 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 21.3 points per game with 59.1 percent field goal shooting and she gets 7.7 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 12.8 points per game and she is making 32.2 percent of her three-point shots and has made 49 three-point shots. Rhinesmith also averages 5.2 rebounds per game. Rachel Evavold is good for 12.1 points per game and 6.8 rebounds and she is making 52.9 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 7.5 points per game and Kenzie Bousema is at a 6.8 points per game average while coming off the bench. Sienna Stamness is at 5.9 points per game while Jordyn Van Maanen adds 4.7 points per game. Harmsen leads the team with 60 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages just under five assists per game.

The Defender men are 18-11 this season and 10-9 in GPAC play.  

Dordt is outscoring teams 83.2-79.1 and outrebound teams 40.7-34.8. Dordt has shot 47.0 percent from the field and allow teams to make 44.1.  The Defenders have converted 402 free throws out of 546 attempts and have limited opponents’ trips to the free throw line to 398.   

Garrett Franken has scored 13.5 points per game and has 33 made three-point baskets with 6.7 rebounds per game. Chad Barkema is scoring 11.9 points per game and is making 56 percent of his field goals and Jesse Jansma has an 11.2 points per game average to go with 47 made three-point shots. Alec Henrickson has an 11.2 scoring average and Josh Van Lingen is at 10.4.  Henrickson is the team leader in made three-point shots with 55 and has made 35.9 percent of his three-point attempts. Zach Bussard is chipping in with 9.9 points per game and Ben Gesink is adding 7.6. Chandler Brunsting leads the team in assists with 77 and Barkema has 70.


Hastings secured a 69-52 win over Midland at home on Wednesday after leading 29-25.  The Broncos outscored Midland 20-13 in the third quarter and 20-14 in the fourth quarter. Farmer scored 20 on 5-7 shooting and she made 7-8 free throws. Grasso added 15 and had five rebounds with three assists. Hastings was 23-53 from the field and forced 34 turnovers with 24 steals.

The Dordt women trailed Briar Cliff 8-5 midway through the first quarter but held the Chargers scoreless for the next 13 minutes and led 37-12 at halftime.  The Defenders went on to outscore the Chargers 46-23 in the second half for an 83-35 win. Feenstra scored 14 Stamness added 13. Harmsen, Rhinesmith and Bousema scored nine each.

The Hastings men beat Midland 88-70 after leading 38-25 at halftime. Hiscock scored 22 and Ben Wahlberg added 16 while Lipsovsky came off the bench to score 14 and converted four three-point baskets. Hastings had a 42-29 rebounding advantage and made 32-65 field goals and 15-35 three-point shots.

The Defender men lost 95-92 to Briar Cliff on Wednesday after leading 48-34 at halftime.  Dordt had a shot to take the lead rim out with a minute remaining and the Chargers made free throws down the stretch to preserve the win. Jesse Jansma had 22 points and made four three-point shots. Henrickson added 13 and Franken had 12 with six rebounds.


The Dordt women were 85-66 winners over Hastings on December 8 after falling behind 22-12 after one quarter. Dordt came back to take a 38-35 halftime lead and pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Hastings 19-5 in the final period for the 19 point win. Feenstra scored 29 with 12 rebounds and Rhinesmith scored 19 with four rebounds and seven assists.  Kenzie Bousema scored 14 in the win and Payton Harmsen added 12.  Hastings was led by Grasso with 20 and she had 10 rebounds.

The Defender men were 81-75 winners in Sioux Center earlier this season after leading 42-29 at halftime. Jansma scored 18 and Bussard had 17 points with eight rebounds and Henrickson added 15.  Hastings was paced by Kevin Miller’s 28 and Bart Hiscock had 14 along with Zach Kitten.


This will conclude the regular season for both teams.  Both post-season playoffs begin on Wednesday, February 20.
