Softball Opens Season In Aberdeen

Dordt travels to Aberdeen, South Dakota to compete against Presentation (South Dakota), Valley City State, Dickinson State, Jamestown and Northern State on Thursday, February 14; Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16. The Presentation contests begin Thursday at 5:00 while the Friday and Saturday games start at 3:00.


Presentation is 0-4 this season and has played Jamestown, Valley City State and Dakota Wesleyan.  The Saints have given up at least seven runs in each of their first four games with the closest game in the series coming against Jamestown by a 7-5 decision. Krystle Schweers leads the Saints with a .417 batting average and she has five hits and two runs batted in.  Madison Brink is batting .400 and has two stolen bases.  Bibiana Villeda and Morgan Plumbtree have both gone 0-2 to start the season on the mound and have both pitched 12 innings. Plumbtree has struggled with control and has 17 bases on balls and six strikeouts.  Teams are batting .356 against Presentation.

Valley City State is 4-0 this season with wins over Dakota Wesleyan, Presentation, Jamestown and Dakota State. Emily Smith is batting .583 with seven hits and four runs batted in. Joelle Aiello has a .438 batting average and Marissa Hawkins has two homeruns with eight runs batted in with a .429 batting average.  Valley City State has a .376 batting average and has outscored teams 29-9.  Emilee Wilson is 2-0 on the mound while Emily Smith is also 2-0. Wilson has pitched 14 2/3 innings with 19 strikeouts and has a 0.48 earned run average. Smith has struck out 15 batters and has pitched 12 1/3 innings.

Dickinson State is playing in its season opener after posting a 30-21 record and had a team batting average of .314 last season. Rachael Dillon was the top offensive plyer with 10 homeruns, 69 hits and a .426 batting average. Abi Brooks was 15-10 on the mound with a 2.38 earned run average and she had 74 strikeouts in 179 innings.

Jamestown is 4-1 this season and has outscored teams 32-25 this year. Sydney Prussia has started the season with a .625 batting average with 10 hits and four runs batted in. Morgan Geiszler has six runs batted in and has a .412 batting average. Katie Merchant is 3-1 on the mound with a 3.11 earned run average and has pitched 18 innings and has struck out nine batters.

Northern State is playing in its season opener this weekend after posting a 29-22 record last season and finished the Northern Sun schedule with an 18-10 record.  The Wolves had a .312 batting average and were led by Courtney Sjerven and Kennady Thompson who each had .395 batting averages.  Thompson and Katie Dawson each had five homeruns and Sjerven had 38 runs batted in. Jamie Fisher was 22-14 on the mound and posted a 2.78 earned run average with 107 strikeouts.


The Defenders were 24-20 last season and finished the GPAC season with an 11-9 record.  Dordt batted .280 as a team and was led by Rachel Evavold with a .391 batting average.  She had six homeruns and 16 doubles but will not be available for softball until the basketball season is complete. Evavold had a team high 37 runs batted in.  Marissa Vandenberg batted .362 last season with 54 hits and had a team high 31 runs scored and Hailey Heeringa batted .341 with seven homeruns and 31 runs batted in. Hannah Sikkema batted .309 and Jessica Oules batted .292.  Tianna Soodsma posted a 10-9 pitching record with a 2.89 earned run average and she had 72 strikeouts in 133 innings of work and Evavold had a 9-6 record with a 2.97 earned run average with 103 innings pitched and she struck out 66 batters.


Tianna Soodsma enters this season with 34 career pitching wins (4th all-time), 435 innings pitched (7th all-time) and 224 strikeouts (5th all-time).


Dordt will travel to MidAmerica Nazarene and Park on March 1 and 2 before departing for Tucson, Arizona for games from March 9-15.
