Basketball Hosts Briar Cliff

Dordt will host Briar Cliff on Wednesday, February 13 in a GPAC women’s and men’s doubleheader. The women’s game will start at 6:00 with the men to follow at 8:00. The games can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and online at

The Charger women are 14-14 this season and 8-12 in GPAC games.  The Chargers stopped a three game losing streak with a win over Morningside on Saturday and the Chargers are 5-6 in 2019.

Briar Cliff has been outscored 70.4-68.2 and outrebounded 39.9-38.4.  The Chargers make 41.5 percent of their field goals and allow 38 percent success.  The Chargers are also converting 36.1 percent of their three-point shots while opponents are making 28.1 percent of their field goal attempts.

Taylor Wagner scores a team high 11.3 points per game with 4.1 rebounds and Alyssa Carley is scoring 10.6 points per game.  Logan Ehlers adds 9.6 points per game and takes in 5.3 rebounds. Taylor Vasa and Madelyn Deitchler are each getting 5.6 and 5.2 rebounds per game. Wagner has nearly four assists per game and two steals per outing.

Briar Cliff is 19-7 this season and 13-5 in the GPAC.  The Chargers are 7-4 in January and February.

Jay Wolfe is averaging 22.4 points per game with 7.4 rebounds and 57.2 percent field goal shooting and 47.5 percent three-point accuracy. Ethan Freidel has lifted his average to 16.1 and Jackson Lamb is at 14.5 points per game and has made a team high 84 three-point baskets.


The Defender women are 19-9 overall and 12-8 in the GPAC. The Defenders saw a winning streak stopped at two in a seven points loss to Midland on Saturday.

Dordt is averaging 82.0 points per game with a 70.5 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 46.1-36.2 and are converting 43.9 percent of its field goals while allowing 37.9 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 22.5 points per game with 59.4 percent field goal shooting and she gets 7.6 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 12.9 points per game and she is making 32.5 percent of her three-point shots and has made 49 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 12.3 points per game and 6.7 rebounds and she is making 52.9 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 7.4 points per game and Kenzie Bousema is at a 6.8 points per game average while coming off the bench. Sienna Stamness is at 5.6 points per game while Jordyn Van Maanen adds 4.8 points per game. Harmsen leads the team with 57 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages just under five assists per game.

The Defender men are 18-10 this season and 10-8 in GPAC play. The Defenders have won three games in a row and are 8-4 in 2019.

Dordt is outscoring teams 82.9-78.5 and outrebound teams 40.8-34.9. Dordt has shot 47.0 percent from the field and allow teams to make 44.1.  The Defenders have converted 385 free throws out of 525 attempts and have limited opponents’ trips to the free throw line to 379.   

Garrett Franken has scored 13.6 points per game and has 32 made three-point baskets with 6.8 rebounds per game. Chad Barkema is scoring 12.0 points per game and is making 56 percent of his field goals and Jesse Jansma has a 10.8 points per game average to go with 42 made three-point shots. Alec Henrickson has an 11.2 scoring average and Josh Van Lingen is at 10.5.  Henrickson is the team leader in made three-point shots with 55 and has made 38.8 percent of his three-point attempts. Zach Bussard is chipping in with 9.9 points per game and Ben Gesink is adding 7.4. Chandler Brunsting leads the team in assists with 77 and Barkema has 67.


The Chargers went on the road and beat Morningside 78-61 after leading 38-29 at halftime. Briar Cliff outscored Morningside in both the third and fourth quarters on the way to the 17 point win. Wagner had 16 points and six rebounds for the Chargers and Mya Hendry scored 13 with six rebounds and she was 7-10 from the free throw line. Madelyn Deitchler and Alyssa Carley each had 12 points.  

Dordt had a slow second and third quarter on Saturday and lost a 71-64 decision to Midland. Dordt was down as many as 15 points in the second half before closing the gap to two with three minutes left in the game. Dordt was outscored 40-25 in the second and third periods before putting the threat together to close the game. Evavold had 20 and Rhinesmith 15 in the loss.

The Morningside men beat Briar Cliff 97-79 on Saturday after leading 46-40 at halftime.  The Mustangs outscored Briar Cliff 51-39 in the second half and took advantage of 61 percent field goal shooting to defeat the Chargers.  Briar Cliff lofted 41 three-point shots in the loss out of 66 field goals attempted.  Morningside had a 38-28 rebounding advantage and both teams committed 10 turnovers. Jay Wolfe had 17 in the loss and Ethan Freidel scored 16 while Sammy Green came off the bench to score 14.

The Defender men were 76-56 winners over Midland on February 9 and led by double figures the entire second half. Bussard had 18 points and seven rebounds and Franken scored 15 with five rebounds. Van Lingen added 13 with nine rebounds and Barkema had 11.


Dordt and Briar Cliff played on December 5 with Dordt winning the women’s game 76-55.  Dordt was up 16-11 after one quarter and led 34-29 at the end of the first half.  The Defenders went on a 25-6 run in the third quarter before winning by 21. Evavold scored 18 points with 14 rebounds and Feenstra scored 14 while Kenzie Bousema scored 11 with eight rebounds. Briar Cliff was led by Wagner’s 12 points and Faith Troshynski added 10 as Briar Cliff was limited to 25 percent field goal shooting.

Briar Cliff was an 89-79 winner in Sioux City in early December as Erich Erdman scored 21 and Jay Wolfe added 17 and Jackson Lamb scored 16.  Erdman left the game with what turned out to be a season ending injury late in the contest. Henrickson came off the bench to score 19 and Barkema had 17 while Franken had 12 points and 12 rebounds.


Dordt will face Hastings on the road this Saturday, February 16 with the women’s game starting at 2:00 and the men at 4:00.
