Defender Volleyball Hosts Match Tonight

Dordt will host Missouri Baptist on Thursday, February 7 at 7:00 at the De Witt Gym.  There will be live video of the match available at . The match counts towards the American Midwest/Great Plains/Kansas standings. Results will be posted to and and also at


Missouri Baptist enters play with a 9-0 overall record and a 1-0 league mark with a victory in the league coming against Lindenwood-Belleville on January 21.  The Spartans haven’t lost a set since winning 3-1 over Quincy University.

Missouri Baptist is averaging 12.26 kills per set while allowing 7.93.   Teams get 1.04 points off of aces against the St. Louis, Missouri based school and 1.22 off of blocks.

Luka Cajic leads the potent Spartan offense with 3.27 kills per set and Miljan Kastratovic is good for 3.0.  Steven Rodriguez is putting down 2.96 kills per set and all three have kill efficiencies better than .300. Jason Harman runs the offense with 11.04 assists per set and Rodriguez is the leader in aces with 23 while Jack Huizinga has 18 aces. Skyler Capilonch is the leading digger with a 3.55 average.


The Defenders are 0-4 this season and stand 0-2 in league play after a pair of losses to Ottawa and Park last weekend on the road. 

Dordt is averaging 9.33 kills per set while allowing 14.17. Dordt has a .115 kill efficiency while opponents are at .297.  Dordt has seven service aces and the Defenders get 1.58 points per set on blocks.

Ben Tiemersma averages 3.33 kills per set and has a kill efficiency of .205. Garret Vander Zee’s kill average is 2.58 and Matthew Brandsma’s kill average is 1.67 with a .207 kill efficiency in two matches played.  Tyler Postma is averaging 7.67 assists per set and he gets to 1.67 digs while Austen Scammon is the team leader in digs with a 2.67 average.  Seven different players have one ace serve each for the Defenders.


The two teams played twice last year in league play with the Defenders falling 3-1 on March 1 and 3-0 on March 31.  In the March 1 contest Dordt took set two 25-20 after losing the first set by that same score.  Missouri Baptist won the match with set wins of 25-21 and 25-14 in sets three and four. Tiemersma had ten kills and Kal Bryan and Tristan Sanchez had six kills each while Postma put up 26 assists. Steven Rodriguez recorded 12 kills in the win.

On March 31 the Spartans secured a 25-13, 25-16, 25-23 win as Bryan had eight kills and Tiemersma six for the Defenders and Postma put up 16 assists in the loss. Luka Cajic led all players with 13 kills and Kyle Foley set Missouri Baptist to a .317 kill efficiency with 36 assists.
