Men's Volleyball Travels For Two This Weekend

Dordt will travel to face Ottawa  on Friday, February 1 at 7:00 and Park on Saturday, February 2 at 1:00.  Both matches count towards the American Midwest/Great Plains/Kansas standings. Results will be posted to and and also at


The Ottawa Braves are 2-3 this season and this will be the league opener for the Braves and coach Tom Sorenson. The Braves have won two matches in a row after opening the season with three losses.

Ottawa averages 12.35 kills per set while giving up 11.4.  Ottawa has .265 kill efficiency but has given up 35 ace serves this season while recording 18. Ottawa gets 1.7 points per set on blocks while opponents get 1.8.

PJ Tulikihihifo is averaging 3.7 kills per set with a .305 kill efficiency and Ashan Jordan records 2.88 kills per outing with a .202 kill efficiency. Bryce Thompson records 9.95 assists per set and also has a team high seven aces.

The Park Pirates have a 5-0 record this season with two of the wins coming by 3-1 counts and the other three by 3-0 margins.

Mike Talamantes’s team averages 13.12 kills per set while giving up 10.0. The Pirates also have 30 ace serves this season while giving up 13. The Pirates are also averaging 2.5 points per set on blocks.

Andrea Maggio is leading the team with a 3.18 kills per set average and Felipe Guirau is knocking down 2.94 kills per outing. Luciano Bucci is averaging 11.06 assists per set and Jaylon Player’s dig average is 2.07.


The Defenders are 0-2 this season after losing a pair to Graceland on Saturday, January 26.

Ben Tiemersma is averaging 3.67 kills per set through the two matches with a kill efficiency of .233 and he has two solo blocks.  Garret Vander Zee has a 2.17 kills per set average with 2.5 digs per contest.  Matt Brandsma is good for 1.67 kills per set.

Tyler Postma puts up 7.83 assists per set and is one of six Defenders to record one ace serve so far this year. Austen Scammon has recorded a team high 3.33 digs per set and Postma and Tiemermsma both average 1.17 digs per outing.

Dordt averaged 9.88 kills per set through two matches while allowing 13.33. The Defenders get 2.17 blocks per set while opponents get 1.83.


The Defenders played Ottawa twice in 2018 and lost 3-0 on February 24 and 3-1 on March 24.  In the second meeting in Sioux Center Oswald had 13 kills and Jacobs recorded 12. Dordt’s Alex Durbin had nine along with Ben Tiemersma and Tyler Postma put up 30 assists. Shavon Barker had a match high nine block assists.

Park took both matches last season by 3-0 scores with the second meeting in Sioux Center on March 22.  Park was a 25-16, 25-14, 25-15 winner Durbin led with six kills and Tiemersma had five kills while Postma put up 16 assists and Tiemersma also had nine digs.
