Sioux County Showdown Resumes Tonight

GAMETIME…

Dordt will host Northwestern on Wednesday, January 23 in a GPAC women’s game and a non-conference men’s game. The women’s game will start at 6:00 with the men to follow at 8:00. SIOUX COUNTY SHOWDOWN...

Northwestern currently leads the Sioux County Showdown 6-4.  As part of the annual series the schools are accepting cash donations at each competition between the two teams for Hunger Free Kids of Sioux County.

THE FOE…

The Northwestern Red Raider women are 19-2 this season and 13-2 in the GPAC with losses this season to Dakota Wesleyan and Concordia. Northwestern has won four games in a row dating back to the conference loss to Concordia on January 5.

Chris Yaw’s team is scoring 87.6 points per game and allowing 63.  The Raiders also average a 43.1-29.9 rebounds per game advantage.  Northwestern is converting 48.9 percent of its field goals and 38.6 percent of its three-point baskets.

Kassidy De Jong scores 18.2 points per game with 8.0 rebounds and is converting 36.8 percent of her three-point shots and she hands out nearly three assists per game. Darbi Gustafson is averaging 16.4 points per game with 8.2 rebounds and she is making 54.9 percent of her field goals. Haley Birks is good for 13.2 points per game and Sammy Blum is at 11.2 points per outing. Anna Kiel joined the team in early January and has scored 9.5 points per game with 5.2 rebounds in six games played and is converting 56.4 percent of her field goals.

Northwestern is 13-9 this season and 7-6 in GPAC play after splitting games against Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside last week. 

Northwestern has outscored teams 89.4-79.7 and outrebound teams 40.5-31.6.  Northwestern converts 51.3 percent of its field goal attempts and 40.7 percent of its three-point shots.

Trent Hilbrands is good for 19.0 points per game and has a 4.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game average and he has 46 made three-point shots. Jay Small adds 15.2 points per game and has made a team high 69 three-point shots this season with 42.1 percent success.  Parker Mulder is averaging 10.9 points per game with 6.7 rebounds and Craig Sterk is at 10.1 while Steven Kragt scores 10.0.

DEFENDER NOTES…

The Defender women are 17-6 overall and 10-5 in the GPAC with losses in the league to Northwestern, Dakota Wesleyan (twice) and Morningside (twice). 

Dordt is averaging 84.2 points per game with a 70.8 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 46.7-36.3 and are converting 44.8 percent of its field goals while allowing 38 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 23 points per game with 61.3 percent field goal shooting and she gets 7.9 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 12.9 points per game and she is making 33.6 percent of her three-point shots and has made 40 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 12.3 points per game and 7.1 rebounds and she is making 53.4 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 8.1 points per game and Sienna Stamness is at 6.4 points per game and Kenzie Bousema is at a 6.1 points per game average. Harmsen leads the team with 49 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages 4.9 assists per game.

The Defender men are 15-8 this season and 7-6 in GPAC play.

Dordt is outscoring teams 83.4-78.6 and outrebound teams 41.5-35.2. Dordt has shot 47.1 percent from the field and allow teams to make 43.6.  

Garrett Franken has scored 13.2 points per game and has 25 made three-point baskets with 7.3 rebounds per game. Chad Barkema is scoring 12.0 points per game and is making 55.7 percent of his field goals and Jesse Jansma has an 11.4 points per game average to go with 36 made three-point shots. Alec Henrickson has lifted his scoring average to 11.1 points per game and Josh Van Lingen is at 10.7.  Henrickson is the team leader in made three-point shots with 49 and has made 41.2 percent of his three-point attempts. Zach Bussard is chipping in with 9.7 points per game and Ben Gesink is adding 7.5.

LAST TIME…

The Northwestern women took the suspense out of its game with Morningside early and led 45-14 at halftime before coasting in for an 82-53 win. Anna Kiel came off the bench for 18 points and Darbi Gustafson added 17 points with 12 rebounds. Kassidy De Jong scored 14 points with 10 rebounds and Taylor Vander Velde was good for 11 points and five rebounds.

The Dordt women handled the College of Saint Mary 91-67 on Saturday. Rachel Evavold led the Defenders with 22 points and ten revounds and Erika Feenstra added 17 points and 11 rebounds with four blocked shots. Annie Rhinesmith chipped in with 16 points and had five rebounds.

The Morningside men beat Northwestern 90-85 on Saturday after building a 36-15 first half lead.  The Raiders came back to tie the game 53-53 with 11:56 left in the game but never took the lead before falling by five. Trent Hilbrands led Northwestern with 27 points and eight rebounds. Parker Mulder added 20 points with 12 rebounds and three assists. Northwestern was 32-67 from the field and had a 41-31 rebounding edge.

Dordt beat Nebraska Christian 118-116 in overtime behind Garrett Franken’s 27 points and 10 rebounds. Chad Barkema added 20 points and nine rebounds and both Barkema and Franken each had four assists with Barkema getting three steals and two blocked shots. Zach Bussard scored 17 and Alec Henrickson added 16 points.  Dordt was 39-69 from the field and had a 45-31 rebounding advantage.

THE SERIES…

The Northwestern men were 75-69 winners over Dordt on November 28. Parker Mulder had a basket just before halftime to give Northwestern a 39-37 lead and Northwestern built the lead all the way to 15 before Dordt rallied to within 58-56 with 7:11 left in the game. Dordt was within two on one more occasion but never had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead.  Zach Bussard and Josh Van Lingen each had 14 and Chandler Brunsting 11 for the Defenders. Trent Hilbrands led all players with 23 points while Jay Small and Grant Rohrer both had 11 points.

The Northwestern women beat Dordt 91-84 in Orange City.  Erika Feenstra had a single game record of 43 points with nine rebounds and Annie Rhinesmith scored 15 with Rachel Evavold getting 13. Kassidy De Jong led Northwestern with 28 points and ten rebounds. Sammy Blum added 19 while Haley Birks and Darbi Gustafson each had 16 points.

NEXT…

Dordt will be off until Wednesday, January 30 when it travels to Concordia in Seward, Nebraska. Dordt returns home to face Doane on Saturday, February 2.
