Dordt-Morningside Clash In Sioux City Saturday

Dordt will travel to Morningside on Saturday, January 12 in a GPAC doubleheader. The women’s game will start at 2:00 with the men to follow at 4:00. The Morningside Mustangs are 15-4 this season and 7-4 in the GPAC with losses to Northwestern, Hastings, Midland and Dakota Wesleyan. The Mustangs are 8-1 since December 8 with the only loss in the string coming on the road to Dakota Wesleyan  on January 2 by a 91-67 margin.

Jamie Sale’s team is averaging 81.6 points per game and allows 69.2.  The Mustangs are averaging 40.7 rebounds per game and allow 37.7.  Morningside also converts 44.3 percent of its field goals and 37.9 percent of the three-point shots it attempts.

Sierra Mitchell scores 18.3 points per game and is making 91 percent of her free throws.  She has converted a team high 71 three-point baskets this season and is making 37.2 percent of those long shots. Sydney Hupp scores 12.9 points per game with a team high 6.4 rebounds per game. Skyler Snider puts up 8.9 points per game and Jordyn Moser scores 7.1 with a team high 72 assists in 19 games played.

Morningside’s men are 15-1 this season and 9-1 in the league with the only loss of the season coming to Dakota Wesleyan 86-82 on January 2.

Tyler Borchers has scored 14.0 points per game with 5.9 rebounds and Zach Imig scores 12.4 points per game with 6.3 rebounds and he has a team high 57 assists. Brody Egger scores 11.6 points per game and Matt Hahn’s average is 10.3 and Alex Borchers is at 9.4 points per outing.

The Mustangs are outscoring teams 86.6-67.3 points per game and outrebound teams 36.4-31.6.  Morningside makes 53.9 percent of its field goals and limit teams to 43.4 percent shooting and the Mustangs are making 39.4 percent of its three-point shots.


The Defender women are 15-5 overall and 8-4 in the GPAC with losses in the league to Northwestern, Dakota Wesleyan (twice) and Morningside.  The Defenders have won five in a row since a non-conference loss on the road to Bellevue in mid-December. 

Dordt is averaging 84.1 points per game with a 70.3 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 47.0-36.2 and are converting 44.9 percent of its field goals while allowing 37.6 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 23.9 points per game with 63.8 percent field goal shooting and she gets 8.0 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 13.2 points per game and she is making 34.5 percent of her three-point shots and has made 38 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 11.7 points per game and 7.1 rebounds and she is making 51.6 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 8.8 points per game and Sienna Stamness is at 6.1 points per game and Kenzie Bousema is at a 5.6 points per game average. Harmsen leads the team with 45 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages 5.0 assists per game.

The Defender men are 13-7 this season and 6-5 in GPAC play. The Defenders have league losses to Northwestern, Jamestown, Briar Cliff and Morningside and bounced back from three straight GPAC losses to go 5-2 over the last seven games. 

Dordt is outscoring teams 80.7-76.7 and outrebound teams 41.9-35.7. Dordt has shot 45.3 percent from the field and allow teams to make 43.0.  

Jesse Jansma is scoring 12.2 points per game and has made 33 three-point shots. Garrett Franken is scoring 12.7 points per game with 7.4 rebounds. Chad Barkema and Josh Van Lingen have scored 12.2 and 10.8 points per game respectively and take in 5.9 and 5.8 rebounds each. Barkema is making 55.6 percent of his field goal attempts. Zach Bussard is scoring 9.6 points per game with 5.2 rebounds and converts 57.8 percent of his field goal tries. Alec Henrickson is good for 9.2 points per game and Ben Gesink is at 7.0. Henrickson has made 38 three-point shots and leads the Defenders in that category and has made 36.5 percent of his tries.


Morningside played Dakota State on January 9 and won 89-65 after getting up 48-30 at halftime. Hupp had 20 points and Mitchell converted 12. Faith Meyer came of the bench to score 17 points.

The Defender women lost an 81-66 decision to Dakota Wesleyan and trailed most of the game. Erika Feenstra scored 28 and Rhinesmith scored 13. Dordt converted 23-52 field goals for 44.2 percent success and was outrebounded for the third time this season 31-30.

Morningside beat Mount Marty 94-49 on January 5 after scoring the first ten points of the game. The Mustangs were up by 30 before settling for a 48-24 halftime lead.  Tyler Borchers had 14 points and seven rebounds while Brody Egger scored 13 and Zach Imig 11.

Dordt beat Dakota Wesleyan 81-79 on Wednesday night as Garrett Franken scored a career high 22 with six rebounds and Barkema had 17 with seven rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and two assists. Gesink scored ten and Van Lingen converted eight.


The Defender women lost 97-84 on November 10 in Sioux Center.  The Defenders were down 48-40 at halftime and cut the lead to two in the third quarter but couldn’t get any closer before falling by 13. Feenstra had 31 with 12 rebounds and Evavold scored 14 and Jordyn Van Maanen scored 10. Morningside leads the series 52-12.

Morningside’s men were 77-66 winners in Sioux Center earlier this season. Garrett Franken scored 18 for the Defenders and Chad Barkema had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jesse Jansma scored 12 and Ben Gesink added seven. Morningside was led by Egger’s 14 and Trey Brown and Tyler Borchers had 13 and 12 each. Imig had eight points and ten rebounds. The Defenders trail the series 27-16


Dordt returns home to face Mount Marty on Wednesday night, January 16 and will host the College of Saint Mary in women’s play and Nebraska Christian in men’s play on Saturday, January 19.
