Defenders On Road To Face Doane

The Doane Tigers are 3-14 this season and 0-10 in the GPAC.  Tracee Fairbanks’s team was 2-1 to start the season but lost 12 in a row from November 7 to December 19.  The losing skid stopped with a 69-65 win over Johnson and Wales (Florida). 

Doane is averaging 54 points per game and allow 72.8.  The Tigers are getting outrebounded 37-36.6 and have committed 405 turnovers this season while forcing 269.

Haylee Heits is converting 12.8 points per game and has made a team high 25 three-point shots this season. Sidney Blackburn is good for 8.5 points per game and Emma Areman tops the team with 5.6 rebounds and has a 6.4 points per game average. Areman also has a team high 81 assists through 17 games and she is converting 34.4 per cent of her field goals.

The Tiger men are 5-12 this season with a 2-7 GPAC mark. Doane started the season with a win over Dakota State and then dropped eight in a row from October 30-November 23. The Tigers are 4-4 since that point and have lost three in a row after with a pair of losses in Arizona and a league loss to Northwestern on January 2. Doane has conference wins over Concordia and Mount Marty.

Jake Kornieck leads the team with 15.9 points per game and has made 43.9 percent of his field goals and 39.3 of his three-point shots. Anthony Laravie scores 14.3 points per game and tops the team with 54 made three-point baskets and has made 39.7 percent of his shots. Koh Flippin and Trace Tupper score 13.8 and 13.3 points per game and Tupper leads the team with a 6.5 rebounds per game average.


The Defender women are 14-4 overall and 7-3 in the GPAC with losses in the league to Northwestern, Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside.  The Defenders have won four  in a row since a non-conference loss on the road to Bellevue in mid-December. 

Dordt is averaging 85.0 points per game with a 69.7 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 48-36.6 and are converting 44.7 percent of its field goals while allowing 36.9 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 24.8 points per game with 63.6 percent field goal shooting and she gets 8.6 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 12.9 points per game and she is making 34.3 percent of her three-point shots and has made 35 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 11.6 points per game and 7.6 rebounds and she is making 52 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 9.1 points per game and Sienna Stamness is at 6.7 points per game and Kenzie Bousema is at a 5.9 points per game average. Harmsen leads the team with 44 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages 5.5 assists per game.

The Defender men are 12-6 this season and 5-4 in GPAC play. The Defenders have league losses to Northwestern, Jamestown, Briar Cliff and Morningside and bounced back from three straight GPAC losses to win three in a row in league play from before Christmas to the Wednesday win over Concordia.

Dordt is outscoring teams 81.3-77.6 and outrebound teams 42.2-36.8. Dordt has shot 45 percent from the field and allow teams to make 43.2.  

Jesse Jansma is scoring 13.1 points per game and has made a team high 31 three-point shots. Garrett Franken is scoring 12.5 points per game with 7.4 rebounds. Chad Barkema and Josh Van Lingen have scored 11.9 and 11.1 points per game respectively and take in 5.7 and 5.4 rebounds each. Barkema is making 54.5 percent of his field goal attempts. Zach Bussard is scoring 10.1 points per game with 5.1 rebounds and Alec Henrickson is good for 9.2 points per game and Ben Gesink is at 7.6. Chandler Brunsting leads the team with 3.5 assists per game and Henrickson has converted a team high 35 three-point shots.


The Doane women were on the short end of a 79-49 decision with Northwestern on Wednesday night. Areman had 18 points and six rebounds with three assists and Blackburn added 12 points as Doane was held to 27.8 percent field goal shooting and 28.6 from the three-point line. Doane did convert 15-19 free throws.

The Dordt women overcame a 20-point first half deficit and a late 16-point deficit to win a 97-92 decision in double overtime over Concordia. Erika Feenstra scored 32 and had 12 rebounds with two steals. Siennah Stamness had 17 points and nine rebounds and Rachel Evavold added 15 points with eight rebounds, three blocks and four steals.

Doane’s men were on the short end of an 80-70 decision on January 2. Doane was down 41-32 at halftime and was outscored 39-38 in the second half. Kornieck led the team with 28 points of 10-17 field goal shooting and was 6-10 from the three-point line. Flippin added 18 points and Doane made 26-51 field goals and 10-22 three-point shots but surrendered 16 turnovers and that allowed Northwestern to convert four more field goals than the Tigers.

Dordt earned a 91-73 victory over Concordia on Wednesday with Zach Bussard scoring 20 with eight rebounds. Chad Barkema had 17 points and five rebounds with Garrett Franken scoring 12 per game with six rebounds. The Defenders were 33-55 from the field and had a 35-19 rebounding advantage.


Dordt won both women’s games last season with a 64-59 win in Sioux Center on December 15 and a 70-68 victory on February 3. Erika Feenstra scored a basket in the game on February 3 as time expired to win the game. Kenzie Bousema had 14 and Rhinesmith added 11 with three assists and Feenstra scored ten with five rebounds. McKenna Dodd led the Tigers with 16 and Alea Shaner scored 13. Dordt is 12-16 in the series with Doane that began with the formation of the GPAC in 2000-01.  The wins last year stopped a six game winning streak by Doane in the series.

Doane won both men’s games last season with an 84-77 victory in Sioux Center and a 72-65 in Crete on February 3. In the game at Crete, Doane had a 35-33 halftime lead and led the entire second half on the way to the seven point win. Bussard had 16 in the loss and Kobe Critchley added 10. Nick Kornieck scored 17 and Trace Tupper had 15. Dordt leads the series 20-8 with Doane winning three of the last four meetings between the two teams.


Dordt returns home to face Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 9 before traveling to Morningside on Saturday, January 12.
