Basketball Plays Concordia Tonight

The Concordia Bulldog women are 14-1 this season and 8-1 in the GPAC with the Seward, Nebraska school’s only loss coming to Morningside on November 28 by an 84-75 margin in Seward. The Bulldogs started the year with a nine game winning streak and bounced back with five straight wins since December 5.

Drew Olson’s team is averaging 87.3 points per game while allowing 61.7.  The Bulldogs are converting 43.4 percent of its field goals and allow teams to make 38.5.  The Bulldogs are taking 36 percent of its field goals behind the three-point line and have forced 32 turnovers per game on average while committing 18 per game. The Bulldogs outrebound teams 41.5-39.1.

Taylor Cockerill is scoring 15 points per game and takes in 3.9 rebounds and has converted a team high 29 three-point shots with 39.7 percent success. Philly Lammers is scoring 14.6 points per game with a team high 6.9 rebounds and she has 21 blocked shots. Quinn Wragge and Grace Barry each score 11.3 and 11.2 points per game respectively. Wragge has scored over 1500 career points and Lammers has over 1200.

The Concordia men are 8-8 this season and 1-7 in the GPAC.  The Bulldogs’ win in league play is over Hastings 92-87 in overtime on November 14. Concordia stopped a four game losing skid on December 29 with a 70-64 win over MacEwan in a game played in Arizona.

Concordia is getting outscored 73.6-73.1 and outrebound teams 35.3-34.8. Concordia is converting 44 percent of the field goals it takes from the field and allow teams to make 44 percent. In conference play Concordia is getting outscored 79-67 and is making 41 percent of its field goals while allowing 47.7 percent success. In those conference games the Bulldogs have committed 119 turnovers and forced 88.

Brevin Sloup scores 16.1 points per game and has converted 45 three-point shots and shares team honors with Tanner Shuck in that category. Shuck also has a 15.6 points per game average. Carter Kent scores 8.9 points per game and Chuol Biel is adding 7.4 points per game with a team high five rebounds.


The Defender women are 13-4 overall and 6-3 in the GPAC with losses in the league to Northwestern, Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside.  The Defenders have won three in a row since a non-conference loss on the road to Bellevue. 

Dordt is averaging 84.3 points per game with a 68.4 defensive average. Dordt also outrebounds teams 47.1-35.9 and are converting 44.8 percent of its field goals while allowing 36.7 percent success for opponents.

Erika Feenstra is averaging 24.4 points per game with 63.8 percent field goal shooting and she gets 8.4 rebounds per game. Annie Rhinesmith is good for 13.0 points per game and she is making 33 percent of her three-point shots and has made 32 three-point shots. Rachel Evavold is good for 11.4 points per game and 7.6 rebounds and she is making 52 percent of her field goals. Payton Harmsen adds 9.5 points per game and Sienna Stamness is at 5.9 points per game along with Kenzie Bousema. Harmsen leads the team with 43 made three-point baskets. Rhinesmith averages 5.5 assists per game.

The Defender men are 11-6 this season and 4-4 in GPAC play. The Defenders have league losses to Northwestern, Jamestown, Briar Cliff and Morningside and bounced back from three straight losses to win a pair before Christmas over Hastings and Midland. The Defenders had a three game winning streak stopped by Friends on Saturday.

Dordt is outscoring teams 81.3-77.6 and outrebound teams 42.2-36.8. Dordt has shot 45 percent from the field and allow teams to make 43.2.  

Jesse Jansma is scoring 13.5 points per game and has made a team high 30 three-point shots. Garrett Franken is scoring 12.5 points per game with 7.5 rebounds. Chad Barkema and Josh Van Lingen have scored 11.6 and 11.3 points per game respectively and take in 5.8 and 5.7 rebounds each. Barkema is making 53.5 percent of his field goal attempts. Zach Bussard is scoring 9.5 points per game with 4.9 rebounds and Alec Henrickson is good for 9.2 points per game and Ben Gesink is at 7.6. Chandler Brunsting leads the team with 3.5 assists per game and Henrickson has converted a team high 33 three-point shots.


Concordia beat Southeastern (Florida)59-51 last week after taking a 22-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Concordia limited Southeastern to two points in the second quarter and held on to win by eight points. Lammers had 17 points in the win with ten rebounds. Barry and Cockerill each had 11 points. Concordia won despite shooting just 28.4 percent from the floor but the Bulldogs had a 55-40 rebounding edge.

Dordt turned away Trinity Christian on December 29 by a 72-42 margin.  Dordt had a 37-25 advantage at halftime and a 56-34 third quarter edge. Rachel Evavold had 18 points and nine rebounds with two blocks and two steals. Peyton Harmsen and Jordyn Van Maanen had 12 points each with nine and six rebounds respectively. The Defenders limited Trinity Christian to 29 percent shooting and 19 percent from the three-point line.


The Concordia Bulldogs beat MacEwan on December 29 by a 70-64 margin after leading 42-35 at halftime. Sloup had 24 points and made 6-10 three-point shots while Shuck had 11 points and Justin Wiersma had 13 points. Concordia converted 11-27 three-point shots and won in spite of a 46-26 rebounding deficit. The Bulldogs forced 30 turnovers and committed 16.

The Defender men lost to Friends 90-78 on December 29 in Orange City. Alec Henrickson scored 14 and Ben Gesink had 13 with five rebounds and two assists. Jesse Jansma and Josh Van Lingen each had 10 points and Chandler Brunsting added nine with five rebounds. Garrett Franken had eight points and nine rebounds with two steals.


The Bulldog women beat Dordt in both games last season with a 101-55 win in Sioux Center and a 107-68 victory in Seward. In the game at Seward the Bulldogs were up 21-14 after one quarter and 47-33 at the half.  Dordt got 14 points from Ebby Prewitt and Evavold had 13. Hoppes had 20 points and Cockerill had 14 with Wragge adding 13.  Concordia forced 34 turnovers and had 18 more shots from the floor than the Defenders in the win. Concordia leads the series 28-7 and Dordt’s last win in the series was 96-86 in double overtime in the 2012-13 season.

The Bulldogs won both games last season in the men’s series with an 85-80 win in Sioux Center on December 2 and a 74-59 in in Seward on January 20. Concordia led 38-27 at halftime in the January meeting with Clay Reimers scoring 18 and Jake Hornick scored 10. Ben Gesink led the Defenders with 14 and Josh Van Lingen added 11 in the loss. Dordt leads the series 22-12 but Concordia has won four games in a row since an overtime win by the Defenders during the 2015-16 season.


The Defenders will travel to face Doane on Saturday afternoon, January 5 at 2:00 and 4:00 before returning home to face Dakota Wesleyan on January 9 starting with the women’s game at 6:00.
