Women's Basketball Goes To Bellevue Tuesday

The Bellevue Bruins are 9-4 this season and 1-0 in North Star Athletic Association play. Bellevue started the season with three wins and then won four in a row from November 2-13.  The Bruins lost three straight to MidAmerica Nazarene, College of the Ozarks and Hastings and then followed that with back to back wins in their two most recent games.

The Bruins are averaging 81.8 points per game and allow 65.  The Bruins are getting outrebounded by a 39.7-39 average and convert 43.6 percent of their field goals and allow 38.8 success.  Bellevue gets to the free throw line 24 times per game and converts 73.4 percent of their field goals.

Elexis Martinez averages a team high 15.9 points per game and 7.0 rebounds and she is making 52 percent of her field goal attempts. Morgan Cuffe is adding 11.9 points per game and Faith Ross is good for 11.4 points per game and leads the team with 35 made three-point field goals and made 43.2 percent of her long shots. Jamie Winkler scores 9.2 points per game.


Dordt’s women are 10-3 this season and 5-3 in the GPAC.  Morningside handed Dordt its first loss of the season on November 10 after the Defenders started the season 5-0. The Defenders have won three straight games and five of the last six games dating back to November 14.

Dordt’s women are averaging 85.5 points per game and limit teams to 68.7 points per outing.  Dordt also has a 47-37 rebounding advantage and has converted 46.3 percent of its field goals and 33 percent of its three-point shots.

Erika Feenstra averages 25.5 points per game and takes in 8.2 rebounds and she is making 65 percent of her field goals. Annie Rhinesmith averages 13.5 points per game with 5.2 rebounds with five assists per game. Rachel Evavold has an 11.2 points per game average and she gets 7.6 rebounds per outing. Payton Harmsen is scoring 9.3 points per outing and Siennah Stamness contributes 5.9 points. Harmsen leads the team with 36 made three-point shots and Rhinesmith has 26 made three-point field goals.


Bellevue was a 68-59 winner over Dakota State in Madison, South Dakota after trailing 50-46 heading into the fourth quarter. Martinez scores 19 with nine rebounds and Cuffee had 18 points and was 12-14 from the free throw line. Dakota State had a 49-40 rebounding edge but committed 24 turnovers to 17 for the Bruins.

The Defenders overcame a 22-12 first quarter deficit to lead 38-35 at halftime and ran away in the fourth quarter of Dordt’s 85-66 win over Hastings on Saturday. Feenstra had 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds with three steals. Annie Rhinesmith scored 19 points and had seven assists and five steals while Kenzie Bousema added 14 and Harmsen was good for 12 points.


This is the first meeting between the two teams.  Bellevue is in its fourth year of varsity women’s basketball and finished last season with a 19-13 record and 11-5 in North Star Athletic Association play and finished third behind Jamestown and Valley City State and they were a game in front of Mayville State.


The Defender women will travel to face Midland on Saturday in their final game before the Christmas break. Dordt resumes play after the Christmas break against Dakota State and Trinity Christian at a classic hosted by Northwestern on December 28 and 29 in Orange City.
