Dordt will travel to face the Briar Cliff Chargers on Wednesday night, December 5 in Sioux City, Iowa. The games will start at 6:00 with the women’s contest and the men’s game will follow at 8:00. The Briar Cliff Chargers are 5-4 this season and 2-4 in the GPAC. Two of the Chargers’ wins have been in overtime. The wins in league play are over Doane and Mount Marty and those were back to back wins on November 17 and 20 before the Chargers stumbled against Dakota Wesleyan. Mike Power’s team is averaging 75.8 points per game with 70.3 allowed. Briar Cliff is shooting for a 42.4 percent success rate and teams are converting 35.8 against them. Teams outrebound the Chargers 44.7-41.8.
Alyssa Carley scores 12.9 points per game and gets 3.4 rebounds per game while converting 47.3 percent of her field goals. Logan Ehlers is adding 12.8 points per game with a team high 8.2 rebounds per game. Faith Troshynski and Taylor Wagner add 10.8 points per game. Carley and Troshynski have converted 24 and 20 three-point shots each.
The Briar Cliff men are 8-1 this season and 5-1 in the GPAC with a loss to Morningside the lone blemish. Two of Briar Cliff’s wins have been by single digits while the other six have been by 10 points or more. Briar Cliff has won three games in a row in the GPAC including a Saturday win over Dakota Wesleyan. The Chargers are outscoring teams 93-84 but are getting outrebounded 36-35. Briar Cliff makes 42 percent of its three-point shots and 50 percent of its field goals.
Erich Erdman tops the team with a 21.3 points per game average and he is making 45 percent of his three-point shots and is handing out 3.5 assists per game. Jay Wolfe is scoring 20.6 points per game and he is making 56 percent of his three-point shots. Jackson Lamb adds 14.7 points per game and Nathan Freidel has been coming off the bench for 12.4 points per game. Kyle Boerhave and Jaden Kleinhesselink, a pair of freshmen from Sheldon, are scoring 9.1 and 6.1 points per game respectively.
Dordt’s women are 8-3 this season and 3-3 in the GPAC. Morningside handed Dordt its first loss of the season on November 10 after the Defenders started the season 5-0 and Dakota Wesleyan nipped the Defenders by four the next game. Dordt’s third loss was to Northwestern last week but Dordt resumed its winning ways with a home victory over Jamestown.
Dordt’s women are averaging 86.4 points per game and limit teams to 70.2 points per outing. Dordt also has a 47-37 rebounding advantage and has converted 46.2 percent of its field goals and 35 percent of its three-point shots.
Erika Feenstra averages 26.2 points per game and takes in 8.2 rebounds and she is making 66 percent of her field goals. Annie Rhinesmith averages 13.8 points per game with 5.5 rebounds with five assists per game. Rachel Evavold has a 10.7 points per game average and she gets 7.5 rebounds per outing. Payton Harmsen is scoring 9.0 points per outing and Siennah Stamness contributes 5.9 points per outing with Ebby Prewitt at 3.5.
The Defender men are 8-4 this season and 2-3 in the GPAC. Dordt’s losses in league play are to Morningside, Northwestern and Jamestown and its other loss is to Graceland.
Dordt is outscoring teams 82.3-76.4 and has a 42.2-36.5 rebounding edge. Dordt’s converting 45.7 percent of its field goals and 35.9 percent of its three-point shots while limiting opponents to 42.8 percent field goal success.
Garrett Franken is scoring 13.8 points per game with 7.8 rebounds and Jesse Jansma is at 13.8 and leads the team in three-point baskets made with 20. Alec Henrickson is right behind with 19 made three-point baskets. Chad Barkema is at 11.8 points per game with 5.7 rebounds and he is converting nearly 56.8 percent of his field goals. Josh Van Lingen adds 12.0 points per game and Ben Gesink is good for 9.1 but has been dealing with an injury recently. Chandler Brunsting is good for 4.9 rebounds and he leads the team in assists at a shade under three while averaging 6.3. Henrickson is converting 7.6 points per game.
Briar Cliff hung in against Dakota Wesleyan but fell by a 73-68 decision at home. Wagner had 13 and Ehlers came off the bench to score 12. Briar Cliff was down 24-18 after one quarter but got back to within 38-37 at halftime. The Chargers extended the lead to 57-50 after three quarters and committed 21 turnovers while holding a 46-32 rebounding edge. Briar Cliff made 27-60 field goals but got to the free throw line just ten times while Dakota Wesleyan shot 24 free throws.
The Defenders were 99-83 winners on Saturday, December 1 with Erika Feenstra leading the way with 32 points and Rachel Evavold added 15 points and six rebounds, Siennah Stamness added 12 points and was 30-64 from the field and 7-19 from the three-point line. Dordt was 32-41 from the free throw line in the win and had a 40-38 rebounding advantage.
The Charger men were 94-90 winners over Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday after leading 46-44 at halftime. Erdman had 31 points and six assists with Wolfe adding 16 and Freidel 15. Kleinhesselink came off the bench to convert 5-6 field goals and score 14 points.
Dordt’s men lost a 96-89 overtime decision on Saturday to Jamestown. Dordt was led by Josh Van Lingen’s 21 points and Zach Bussard came off the bench to score 17 with 10 rebounds. Franken and Jansma scored 14 each in a game Dordt led by 12 early in the second half.
The Defender women lost to Briar Cliff on November 18 last year in Sioux City but earned a 51-38 win on February 17 in Sioux Center. Rachel Evavold had 14 in the win and Dordt limited Briar Cliff to 15-58 field goal shooting. Dordt won in spite of 33 turnovers.
The Defenders lost the men’s game in Sioux Center on January 13 by a 78-66 score but won the game on February 17 by an 81-75 margin. Marcus Winterfeld had 27 points in that win and Barkema and Gesink each had 13. Blake Wiltgen scored 22 and Erdman had 17 in the loss.
Both Dordt teams are at home on Saturday as they host Hastings with the women’s game starting at 2:00 and the men at 4:00.
