Round Of 16 Match For Dordt Friday Morning

WHERE AND WHEN…

Dordt will play in the NAIA National Championship 16-team elimination bracket which starts play on Friday morning, November 29 at the Gateway Arena in the Tyson Event Center. Dordt faces Eastern Oregon at 11:15 AM Friday for the right to move on the quarterfinal round at 6:00 Friday night. The matches will be available on KDCR 88.5 FM.  The NAIA produces a pay per view option for online viewing at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/naia/ . OPPONENTS…

Eastern Oregon enters play as the runner up in pool F as the Mountaineers went 2-1 and sport a 25-8 record overall and a 17-3 finish in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.  Three of Eastern’s losses came early in the year to Vanguard, Providence and Rocky Mountain.  Southern Oregon handed the Mountaineers a loss in league play on October 6 and again in the post-season on November 10.

In pool play Eastern Oregon beat Central Methodist (Missouri) 3-2 and Oklahoma City 3-1 before getting swept by defending champion Lindsey Wilson on.

Megan Bunn tops the team with 3.38 kills per set and Hailee Ackerman adds 3.07 with a .262 kill efficiency. Madison Pilon averages 5.15 assists and Sarah Carpenter is good for 4.82. Carpenter is the leader in ace serves with 37 and Kiley McMurtrey tops the team with 4.55 digs per set.

The Mountaineers average 12.68 kills and allow 11.82. Their ace serve season advantage is 173-114 and they score 2.58 points per set on blocks while allowing 1.44.

THE DEFENDERS…

Dordt has a 30-2 record this fall and finished 16-0 at the conclusion of the GPAC season. Dordt’s last loss was a 3-2 decision at Grand View on September 7.   Dordt’s other loss is a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Rocky Mountain. Both of those teams are in the 16-team bracket.

Ema Altena leads the team with a 3.9  kill average and she has a .279 kill efficiency while getting to 2.35 digs per set and she has 39 ace serves this year.  Leah Kamp is averaging 2.75 kills per set with a .320 kill efficiency while Ally Krommendyk’s average is 2.26 with a .306 efficiency. Julia Lindbergh and Jessi De Jager are good for 2.02 and 1.77 kills per set and De Jager is averaging just under a block per set along with Kamp.  Krommendyk leads the team with 1.38 blocks per set.

Jamie De Jager is putting up 10.78 assists per set with 35 aces and 2.36 digs per outing.  She also has a 1.0 kills per set average. Hannah Connelly has 26 ace serves and 1.92 digs and Aubrey Drake has 21 aces and leads the team in digs with 5.14 per game. Dordt scores  has a 158-109 service ace advantage and scores 2.61 points per set on blocks and opponents get 1.73.  Teams are averaging 9.56 kills against Dordt with a .104 kill efficiency.

Coach Chad Hanson’s eighth Dordt College edition is making the program’s fourth straight National Championship appearance and its fifth in the last six years. Overall, this is the 14th appearance for the Defenders and 12th since 2000. The Defenders were National Runners-Up in 2016 and 2017 and had a semifinal berth in 2003. This is the Defender’s ninth time advancing out of pool play in those 14 appearances.

LAST ACTION…

Dordt overcame a slow start to defeat The Master’s on Thursday in pool play 22-25, 29-27, 25-16, 25-12. Ema Altena had 15 kills and Leah Kamp and Jessi DeJager each had 12. Jamie De Jager put up 46 assists and had 14 digs.  Ally Krommendyk had 10 kills and was in on six blocks.

Eastern Oregon was tripped up by Lindsey Wilson 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 in pool play on Thursday. Ackerman had 12 kills and Megan Bunn and Taylor Tibbetts recorded seven kills each.  Madison Pilon had 19 assists  and Kiley McMurtrey 14 digs in the loss.

HISTORY…

This will be the second meeting between these two teams with Dordt beating Eastern Oregon on August 18 of last year.  Dordt was a 25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 winner behind 12 kills by Altena and nine by Kamp.  De Jager put up 27 assists and Altena had 13 digs and Erica Bousema 13.  Ackerman lead Eastern Oregon with eight kills and Pilon had 19 assists.  Eastern Oregon qualified for the round of 16 last year as well and lost in the first round.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE….

The winner will face the winner of the Columbia-Hastings match at 6:00 on Friday night. The semifinals will get going at 11:00 am on Saturday with the championship match at 7:00 pm.
