HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt University women's soccer team finished its 2019 season with a 3-2 loss to Briar Cliff in the GPAC Quarterfinals on Thursday. The women were trailing 3-0 with 35 minutes to play in the second half and scored twice, but weren't able to create enough offense to finish the comeback.
Brianna Yepez started the scoring in the 25th minute to give Briar Cliff the 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Flor Suarez made it 2-0 in favor of Briar Cliff off of a Taylor Hill assist.
The Defenders controlled possession over the final fifteen minutes of the half, but weren't able to sneak any shots past goalkeeper Ruby Campa.
Ten minutes into the second half, Taylor Hill added a goal to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.
The Defenders' Emily Kooiman responded two minutes later to pull Dordt within two. Katherine Kooiman added to the total in the 65th minute to make it 3-2 Chargers.
The Defenders had three shots in the final 25 minutes, but couldn't manage the tying goal.
DeLynne Zevenbergen had nine saves in the loss.
Dordt was outshot 16-10 in the game.
Katherine Kooiman had four shots on goal for the Defenders.
BRIAR CLIFF NUMBERS
Ruby Campa made three saves for the Chargers.
Briar Cliff will play again on Saturday in the GPAC semifinals.
