HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt University men's volleyball team suffered its fifth loss of the season on Wednesday in a 3-2 match to Morningside.
The first set was back-and-forth with both teams possessing the lead numerous times. The Mustangs were leading 24-23 late in the set, but a kill by Garret Vander Zee tied it at 24. The Defenders took a 27-26 lead a few points later, but three straight points by Morningside gave the Mustangs a 29-27 victory.
The Defenders found their groove in the second set and shot out to an 11-6 lead. Morningside pulled within one to make it 16-15, but couldn't grab the lead. Dordt pulled away and took set two 25-16.
Set three was similar to the first set with both teams taking the lead at different points throughout the set. It was tied at 13 halfway through and the Defenders were able to secure an 18-15 lead after two blocks and a kill by David Benthem. Morningside responded with a 10-5 run to take set three 25-23.
Set four finished 25-23 in favor of Dordt. It was tied at 10 partway through the set. Dordt put together a 9-4 run over the next few minutes to take a 19-14 lead. Morningside was able to crawl back and make it 24-23, but a kill by Vander Zee sealed the 25-23 victory.
The Mustangs controlled set five. It was tied at four early, but a few errors by the Defenders gave Morningside a 10-5 lead. Dordt was never able to recover and dropped the set 15-10.
Garret Vander Zee led both teams with 22 kills. Caleb Kulesza also added 10 for the Defenders.
Tyler Postma had 36 assists in the loss.
Three different players (Postma, Brandon Vaags, Levi Ewald) had 10 or more digs in the game.
Jackson Presha led the Mustangs with 16 kills.
Diego Aguilar had 37 assists in the victory.
Dordt will play Graceland in Lamoni, IA at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
