Dordt def. Park 7-6
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender softball team salvaged a split of their doubleheader with Park on Saturday afternoon with a 7-6 win over the Pirates.
Dordt had to come from behind after giving up two runs int eh first inning and started the comeback with a run in the second as Marissa Vanden Berg had one of her four hits to score Brooklyn VanOort. Dordt then took the lead on a Hannah Sikkema sacrifice fly in the second inning and a ground out by VanOort that pushed Addison Hansen across.
The Defenders added two runs in the fourth inning on three hits and two errors for a 5-2 lead but the hosts came back with three in the home half of the fourth to even the score at 5-5.
An Ella Koster double in the fifth inning put Dordt up 6-5 as Kayla Zevenbergen scored and Hannah Sikkema doubled in Haylee Heims in the sixth inning for a 7-5 lead.
The Pirates made it interesting with a run in the seventh inning and they got the tying run on first base with one out in the seventh. Dordt’s Natalie Fopma was able to retire the final two batters without trouble and Dordt prevailed 7-6.
Dordt banged out 15 hits while Park had seven.
Fopma went the distance and allowed four earned runs out of six total and struck out five with one walk and seven hits allowed.
Marissa VandenBerg had three singles and a double and Haylee Heims had three singles.
Brooklyn VanOort had two singles and Ella Koster had a single and a double.
Dordt is 7-3 this season and Park is now 1-3.
Dordt will compete in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday, March 7 in the first of 12 games over Spring Break.
