Park def. Dordt 9-7

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defenders were on the short end of a 9-7 decision in game one of their doubleheader with Park on Saturday afternoon in Parkville, Missouri.

The Defenders rallied from a 6-0 deficit but came up short.

The Pirates scored a run in the first inning on a pair of singles and an error for an unearned run and then added two more runs in the second inning with three hits and they left two runners on base.  The Pirates kept the pressure on with a three run third inning to establish the 6-0 lead.

Dordt chipped away at the lead with Hailey Heeringa and Haylee Heims both getting singles to start the threat. Janae Wynja had a one-out single that scored a run and Jessica Oules doubled in Heims.  Wynja was thrown out at the plate trying to score and Dordt trailed 6-2.

After a scoreless bottom of the fourth Dordt came back with two more runs in the fifth inning with Heims knocking in a pair of runs to get Dordt within 6-4. A three run fifth inning followed for the hosts and they were up 9-4.

In the sixth inning the Defenders started their threat with Chandler Schemper reaching on an error. Marissa VandenBerg singled and Erin Bredemus followed with a walk to load the bases. Emma Veenstra delivered a bases clearing triple and was stranded at third when the inning ended.

Park went scoreless in the sixth and Dordt in its last chance started the seventh with a Hannah Sikkema single. The Defenders then sent the tying run to the plate with saw all three retired on a pair of pop outs and a strikeout to the end the game.

THE NUMBERS

Dordt was outhit 13-11  and there were a total of seven  walks issued by the two teams combined.

Marissa VandenBerg was 3-4 with a double and two singles.

Hailey Heeringa and Haylee Heims each had a pair of singles and Heims had two runs batted in.

Veenstra got credit for three runs batted in with her triple.

Abby Kraemer took the loss and pitched two and a third innings with a strikeout. Haylee Heims and Jessica Flaherty pitched in relief with Flaherty going and inning and a third with a walk and a strikeout and two hits given up.
