MidAmerica Nazarene def. Dordt 3-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender softball team’s efforts for a split of its doubleheader with MidAmerica Nazarene were thwarted by a two run sixth inning as the Defenders were beaten 3-2.
Dordt’s runs came in the fifth and sixth innings for a 2-1 lead. Hannah Sikkema homered in the fifth inning with one out and the Defenders threatened for more with back to back singles but the runners were stranded when the inning ended.
Dordt took a 2-1 lead Emma Veenstra knocking in Jessica Oules with a single to leftfield.
The Defenders were unable to hold the lead with a wild pitch with the bases loaded scoring the tying run and a sacrifice fly giving the hosts the go ahead run.
Dordt threatened in the seventh with a lead off walk to Brooklyn VanOort and she advanced to second on a Jessica Flaherty single with one out. Erin Bredemus grounded to second base on the ensuing at-bat and Flaherty was forced out at second base. VanOort tried to score on the play and was thrown out at home plate for the out of the ordinary double play.
Dordt had an 8-4 hits advantage.
Jessica Flaherty and Hailey Heeringa both had singles.
Marissa VandenBerg, Erin Bredemus, Emma Veenstra and Hannah Sikkema accounted for a hit each with Sikkema’s homerun the only extra base hit of the game.
Abby Kraemer took the loss and struck out six while scattering four hits with two walks.
Dordt will face Park in Parkville, Missouri on Saturday, February 29.
