Concordia def. Dordt 91-79


The Concordia Bulldogs came from behind early in the second half and won a 91-79 decision over Dordt in Seward, Nebraska on Saturday, January 4.

The two teams battled to three ties in the first half, the last one at 33-33 and the Defenders had a narrow 40-39 lead with 1:37 left in the first half. A Garrett Franken basket pushed the lead to 42-39 and Marcus Winterfeld had a deep three-point shot to extend the lead to 45-39.

The teams swapped turnovers and on their next possessions and Dordt had the final possession of the half and made the most of it when Jesse Jansma found Franken underneath the basket as time expired for a 47-39 advantage.

The Defenders seized their biggest lead of the game with a Franken jumper at the 19:28 mark for a 49-39 lead. An 8-0 run over the next two minutes put Concordia right back in the game and the Bulldogs took their first lead of the second half at 59-57 with 12:35 left in the game.

Concordia built the lead to 75-68 with 5:07 left when Dordt rallied to within three, getting a pair of Jesse Jansma free throws to cut the gap to 75-72 with 4:23 left in the game. Concordia knocked down a three-point shot on the next possession and blew the lead up to 12 on back to back three-point shots. Dordt never got closer than nine the rest of the game in falling 91-79.


Dordt was 29-68 from the field and 9-23 from the arch for 43 and 39 percent respectively.

Concordia converted 33-65 field goals and 13-27 three-point shots for 51 and 48 percent.

Concordia had a 39-38 rebounding.

Garrett Franken had 20 points and 11 rebounds with five assists and two blocked shots.

Chad Barkema added 11 points with four rebounds and four assists.

Zach Bussard came off the bench for Dordt and Ben Gesink had eight points.


Dordt will host Mount Marty on Wednesday, January 8.
