HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team pulled away from the Doane Tigers midway through the first half of a GPAC game it hosted Thursday night and won by a 36 point margin.
The Defenders were up 18-14 when a Caleb Harmsen three-point shot with 10:41 left in the half got the Defenders rolling. A Marcus Wintefeld basket put Dordt up 23-14 and back to back three-point baskets by Cade Bleeker gave Dordt a 32-16 advantage.
Bleeker continued to have the hot hand as he converted seven straight three-point shots in the first half and helped stake the Defenders to a 51-30 halftime lead. Doane had the lead down to 43-30 at one point but two-point baskets by Josh Van Lingen, Garrett Franken and Chandler Brunsting extended the lead back to a more comfortable margin.
Doane got the lead down to 16 with 10:57 left in the game at 60-44 but Dordt outscored Doane 19-5 to push the lead to 30 and won going away with a 36 point margin.
Dordt was 32-62 from the field and 15-34 from the arc with 12-16 free throw shooting.
Doane was 21-70 from the field and 5-27 from the arc and 8-14 from the free throw line.
Dordt had a 48-38 rebounding edge.
Bleeker scored 26 points and tied a Dordt record with eight made three-point shots and was 8-11 from the three-point line.
Jesse Jansma had nine points and four assists.
Chad Barkema had eight points and six assists.
Garrett Franken scored eight with seven rebounds and three assists.
Chandler Brunsing and Josh Van Lingen each had seven rebounds.
Dordt is 5-3 in the GPAC and 13-4 overall. Doane is 0-7 and 4-12.
Dordt will face Concordia on Saturday, January 4 in Seward, Nebraska.
