Briar Cliff def. Dordt 83-65
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team lost an 83-65 decision to Briar Cliff on the road Wednesday night in GPAC action in Sioux City.
The Defenders had an early 11-6 lead after free throws by Erika Feenstra and maintained the five point lead after a Bailey Beckmann three-point basket for a 17-12 lead with 3:07 left in the first quarter.
Briar Cliff put together a 8-0 run over the next minute to take a lead it never relinquished, grabbing the lead for good on a Konnor Sudmann basket with 2:11 left in the quarter for a 19-17 advantage.
Dordt was down 24-23 at the end of the first quarter but fell behind 32-25 just over three minutes into the second period. A basket by Feenstra and a three-point basket by Beckman got Dordt as close as 32-30 but the Chargers responded with a 10-0 run and lead 44-36 at halftime.
Briar Cliff started the second half with a 13-4 run and led by double digits the rest of the game in securing the 18-point victory.
Dordt was 24-46 from the field and 5-21 from the arc while converting 12-18 free throws.
Briar Cliff was 25-63 from the field and 5-19 from the arc and had a 28-31 free throw shooting night.
Briar Cliff had a 36-27 rebounding advantage and took advantage of 34 Dordt turnovers while committing 24.
Erika Feenstra scored 22 on 8-11 field goal shooting and Bailey Beckman added 14 while converting 5-6 field goals and 4-5 three-point shots.
Rachel Evavold grabbed a team high seven rebounds and had three assists.
Briar Cliff was topped by Sudmann’s 23 and she was 14-14 from the free throw line.
Dordt is now 20-7 overall and 12-7 in the league while Briar Cliff is 8-19 and 5-14.
Dordt will host Hastings on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center in a 2:00 start.
