Dordt def. Grand View 3-2 (25-22, 25-19. 23-25, 13-25, 16-14)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender volleyball team secured a non-conference win over a ranked Grand View team on Saturday, October 5 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders had to withstand a comeback attempt from the Vikings in both the match and the set to win their 13th match of the season.
Set one featured 13 ties with the final one coming at 19-19. Dordt broke the tie with an Ally Krommendyk kill and a ball handling error against Grand View put the Defenders up 21-19. The lead eventually grew to 24-20 with back to back blocks by Dordt putting it on set point and after two points by the Vikings Dordt won it on a service error.
Set two was tied 8-8 before seven points in a row resulted in a 15-8 Dordt advantage. Grand View got as close as 21-18 but back to back kills by Bronner and Smits made it 23-18 and Dordt eventually won the set 25-19 with back to back ball handling errors called against Grand View.
The Vikings established control early in set three and took an 18-12 lead before Dordt rallying to tie the set 21-21 getting kills from Bronner and Jessi De Jager to knot it. The score was tied again at 22-22 after the teams exchanged points. The Vikings got back to back kills to lead 24-22 and a Smits kill for Dordt cut the lead to 24-23. Another kill by Alexa Aldrich-Ingram pushed the Vikings to a 25-23 win.
The momentum gained in set three for the Vikings continued in set four and the Vikings raced out to a 21-7 lead before winning 25-13 as Dordt couldn’t make a sustained rally.
The Defenders scored back to back points on a Bronner kill and a Krommendyk block to open the set. The lead was still three at 8-5 before the Vikings tied it 8-8. The teams exchanged points to a 10-10 tie and Grand View took the lead on an attack error. This time it was Dordt’s turn to put together a four-point run on a Bronner kill and back to back attack errors by Grand View followed by a ball handling error.
Grand View rallied with three points of their own to tie the set 14-14. A Karsyn Winterfeld kill from the back row put Dordt on match point and Ava Van Soelen ended it with a kill off an assist from Megan Raszler.
Dordt had a 69-55 kill advantage and had an 85-69 digs edge.
Grand View scored 12 points on blocks and Dordt five. Both teams had one service ace with Grand View committing five service aces and Dordt six.
Raszler had a match high 54 assists and Hannah Conelly got to 28 digs to lead all players.
Winterfeld had 18 kills and Ally Krommendyk put down 16. Winterfeld also handled 35 serves cleanly.
Bronner and De Jager had 14 and ten kills each for the Defenders.
Grand View was topped by Aldrich-Ingram’s 19 kills and Keely Larkin had 18 digs.
Dordt is now 13-6 overall. Grand View falls to 15-8.
Dordt will host Mount Marty on Wednesday night and Dakota Wesleyan next Saturday as the GPAC season continues. The Defenders are currently 4-3 in league play.
