Dordt defeats Briar Cliff 3-1 (30-28, 21-25, 25-21, 25-14)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender volleyball team improved to 4-3 in league play with a 3-1 road win over Briar Cliff on Wednesday night, October 2 in Sioux City, Iowa.
Set one was tightly contested with 16 total ties. Briar Cliff had a 22-20 lead but Karsyn Winterfeld kill ignited a run that saw Dordt score four out of the next five points and put the Defenders at set point 24-23. Briar Cliff rallied and actually was serving for set point at 26-25 but an attack error tied the score and Dordt never trailed again, eventually scoring back to back points on set error by the Chargers and a block by Ally Krommendyk for the 30-28 win.
Set two was tied 12-12 before five points in a row put Briar Cliff up for good and the Chargers held on as Dordt rallied to within 23-21 with Hannah Connelly in the server’s box. Briar Cliff ended the threat with a kill and then scored the game winner to tie the match on a block.
The Defenders took the momentum almost immediately in set three with a 10-0 run to lead 11-4. It was again Connelly triggering the run with her serving and Dordt scored four points out of five at one juncture with blocks. Briar Cliff rallied but couldn’t complete the comeback, getting as close as 23-21 before De Jager got a kill and Briar Cliff had a ball handling error for the final two points of the set.
The Defenders again grabbed an early lead in set four and went up 12-5 almost immediately and led 19-8. Briar Cliff didn’t put together a threat this time and the Defenders went on to win 25-14 behind a .294 kill efficiency and Briar Cliff had six kills and six errors in the set.
Dordt had a 50-46 kill advantage and also had a 6-2 service ace edge.
Dordt was led by Karsyn Winterfeld’s 16 kills and she had ten digs with three aces.
Lydia Smits had 12 kills and Ally Krommendyk recorded 11.
Jessi De Jager put down eight kills and was in on four block assists while Jori Bronner had three block assists.
Megan Raszler led Dordt’s offense with 42 assists and Hannah Connelly had 12 digs.
Briar Cliff’s Victoria Gonzalez had a team high 14 kills.
Dordt is now 12-6 overall and 4-3 in the GPAC.
Briar Cliff is 13-8 and slips to 3-4 in the league.
Dordt will host Grand View on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 in non-conference volleyball.
