HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defenders had to battle to five sets before turning away Dakota Wesleyan in Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball play on Saturday in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Dordt battled back to tie set one 20-20 on an Ally Krommendyk kill but Wesleyan responded with five points in a row to end the set and take a 1-0 match lead.

Dordt got out to a 19-10 lead in set two after another Winterfeld kill but the hots wouldn’t go away, staging a rally with eight straight points to cut the lead to 20-19. A Jessi De Jager kill ended the Dordt drought but the Tigers eventually evened the score and took a 23-22 lead after a Dordt attack error. Ally Krommendyk evened the set with kill to make it 23-23 but a service error put the hosts on set point.

Winterfeld responded with another kill and followed with an ace to get up 25-24 but a service error again tied it at 25-25. Dordt didn’t trail again though and score back to back points off of kills by Lydia Smits and Winterfeld to win the set and tie the match.

Dordt rallied in set three from an early deficit but Wesleyan held on for a 25-22 win. In comparison set four held little drama with Dordt forging a 16-11 lead and held on as Wesleyan got no closer than two with Dordt prevailing 25-18.
