HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt College men's baseball team bounced back from a loss earlier in the day to Jamestown to defeat Mayville State 16-9.
Luke Drooger started on the mound for Dordt. The Defenders led off and went three-and-out to begin the game. Mayville State scored twice in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Pluth sent Paxton Ketchum home on a single after Ketchum hit a triple in the opening at bat. Zachary Foster then scored Brady Nygaard with a single to center.
The Defenders responded with four runs of their own to begin the second inning. Parker Hamann singled home Austin Pillar to kick things off. A wild pitch by Mayville State starter Josh Rodriguez scored Dillon Branderhorst. Lucas Nelson and Hamann scored off of a Logan Cline single to help Dordt take the 4-2 lead.
Both teams' bats stayed hot in the third inning. Branderhorst hit a single to left field that scored Cody Veach. Cline hit another single to right that scored Branderhorst and Nelson to give Dordt a 7-2 lead. Andrew Pullar struck out to end the rally.
Nygaard hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third that scored Nelson. Pluth scored for the second time in the game off of a Gunner Garpestad single to right that pulled the Comets within three runs.
Mayville State replaced Rodriguez with Julian Ortiz at the top of the fourth and he managed to stop the Dordt momentum with three straight outs.
The Comets scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. An error by Dordt scored Kyle Maunahan and Ketchum.
Both teams managed one run in the fifth inning. David Laurenti scored for Dordt after stealing home and Zachary Foster hit a home run for the Comets.
Dordt had an 8-7 lead entering the sixth and mustered a huge rally to score six more runs and take a 14-7 lead.
The seventh and eighth innings went by without any runs. Dordt scored two more runs in the top of the ninth and Mayville State scored two as well. It wasn't enough and Dordt took the 16-9 victory.
Dordt finished with 13 hits.
Austin Pullar, David Laurenti and Dillon Branderhorst each had three hits.
Luke Drooger and Jaden Vander Molen pitched Dordt to the victory. Drooger gave up eight hits and seven runs. Vander Molden surrendered four hits and two runs.
Mayville State had 12 hits in the game.
Five different Mayville State players had one hit.
Josh Rodriguez, Julian Ortiz, Matthew Johnston and Uriel Rosario each saw time on the mound.
Dordt will play Southwest Minnesota State at 5:00 p.m. CT on Monday.
