HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt baseball team capped off its Arizona trip with a 7-4 loss to Morningside.
The Defenders started strong with four runs in the first inning. Dillon Branderhorst was walked when the bases were loaded and Lucas Nelson scored. Chris Schrieber was walked next and Austin Pullar scored. Cody Veach hit a single in the next at bat that sent Cam Pfafman and Branderhorst home.
Dordt starter Logan Horne held Morningside to one run in the bottom of the first. Carter Kratz started the inning with a triple and was sent home by Levi Davidson's double. Horne settled in and retired three of the next four batters.
Morningside scored another run in the bottom of the second to pull within two. Kratz hit a grounder to second that scored Braden Smutz.
Neither team scored in the third inning.
The Mustangs managed two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nic Metcalf was walked when the bases were loaded and Kratz scored. Andrew Kasperbauer hit a single to left field a few batters later and Levi Davidson scored tying the game at four.
Three unanswered runs over the final two innings gave the Mustangs the victory.
Logan Horne and Cole Vande Vegte shared time on the mound. Vande Vegte had four strikeouts in his 2.2 innings.
Dordt was held to four hits in the game.
Jordan Kyle was credited with the victory. He had eight strikeouts in the win.
Andrew Kasperbauer had three hits to lead all players.
Dordt will play Dakota Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in Mitchell, South Dakota.
